if 2 people (husband and wife, per se) were to make 30k a year, they'd still be counted as a single household in tax data. This also goes by gross (pre-deduction) incomes. that includes exorbitant health insurance.

it entirely depends on the household income. For tax purposes, if a person were to live entirely on public assistance (i.e. food stamps, Medicaid, Social Security, unemployment insurance), this would be counted as household income.

a big eye opener for me was realizing that 'median income' stats don't include the unemployed, and don't really account for the massive inequality in salaries between the 10-15% of managers and professionals and the average person who makes like maybe 40k pre-tax each year.
