McIlroy had been a bit quiet since Bethpage. This is one of my favorite quotes from RORY, with Paul McGinley offering so much insight on when/why McIlroy plays his best: “When his heart is engaged in something, and it really means something to him, he generally delivers. And then he goes into these flat periods in his career—he’s had lots of them. It’s an Irish thing to be melancholy, and he goes into these periods of melancholy, but it’s not that he’s not caring—it’s almost like he’s in a slumber. And then, all of a sudden, he ignites. And when that heart goes on fire, that’s when he comes out and does something that amazes us. If he has that quiet look of determination combined with that joyfulness of chasing a goal, that’s when the magic happens.”

Watched the Rory documentary. This guy is so right. Golf is hard. And his much criticised caddy probably gave the best pre-extra time advice ever. Mad how Rory actually got this over the line. With so much at stake. Mental.

We didn't rave enough about Rory McIlroy's mental/emotional reset last April after the regulation bogey on 18/72. I can't imagine any comparable sporting context. Maybe the second of two free throws with no time remaining to win the NBA title. Maybe. All by yourself. The world watching. You against your mind. Still feels different to me. Golf is so quiet. World class out from greenside bunker to four feet. Misses winning putt low. Devastation. Marks ball. Wipes brow. Putts for playoff. Walks off green, kisses wife/daughter, strides to clubhouse through rowdy tunnel of patrons. Stone faced. Processing how close he was. Imagine what's running through his mind! Harry Diamond suggests how thrilled they'd have been Monday morning to earn a playoff opportunity. Perfect message from, in my opinion, the only person who could deliver it and it land perfectly, the only man in the arena with Rory. Immediate mental reset. Perfect drive. Stuffs 125 yard approach to two feet. Putts for victory. Falls to knees. Walks into history.
