SCOTS LAW Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain calls it a day Her job is a poisoned chalice - see problems related to Murrell case, and, sent by the clumsy Sturgeon, her uncertainty if Scotland can call a referendum was highly embarrassing. Scotland's chief law officer is stepping down after five years as head of the country's prosecution service. Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC leads the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and also acts as chief legal adviser to the Scottish government, a serious clash of roles. Earlier this year, Bain was at the centre of a political row when it emerged she had given First Minister John Swinney information about the prosecution of former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell on embezzlement charges. Opposition politicians called for an end to the lord advocate's dual role but SNP ministers said they had no plans to make changes. Bain's departure was expected and follows a recent pattern of lord advocates leaving office after five years in office. ScotGov said Bain has indicated that she "intends to leave office". Swinney is considering ministerial appointments, including the lord advocate, in the expectation that he is reappointed as first minister next week. Bain was appointed lord advocate in June 2021 after she was nominated for the post by former first minister Nicola Sturgeon. During her time in office Bain has brought about major changes in the rules on evidence in sexual offence cases. She introduced changes to strengthen the prosecution of serious crimes by allowing victims' statements to carry more weight as evidence and improved support for victims. She also oversaw the diverting of some offenders, such as in drug cases, towards treatment instead of prosecution. Bain served as an advocate depute in the Crown Office from 2002 to 2011, securing the first murder conviction against serial killer Peter Tobin during that time.

@CrossgateCentre @WingsScotland The point of SNP 1 and 2 isn’t to elect SNP list MSPs, it’s to prevent any other Indy party getting any.

I don't gaf about how vague the legislation is. Q Mini Van is elected under false pretences; he has no valid standing on a visa, and a foreign national gets to make laws that you will be expected to obey. This cannot stand.

Plus this is on a turnout of around half the voting population. But that misses the point. The SNP and Greens know they have no way to deliver independence. It was never about Indy. It was about securing another five years of earnings and lifestyle they couldn’t get anywhere else
Kevin Hague@kevverage

pro-indyref parties’ vote shares: constituency = 40.5% list = 41.2% the idea that these figures in any way, shape or form constitute an indyref2 mandate is for the birds (or the arithmetically challenged)

Losing Ash Regan is a devestating loss for the Scottish Parliament. One of an increasingly small amount of principled voices in Scottish politics.

SCOTTISH ELECTION - 9 Fergus Ewing says goodbye. The veteran MSP (pictured) represented Inverness and Nairn area in all its guises since formation of our Parliament in 1999. His old seat is still to be declared, with Emma Roddick of the SNP against Neil Alexander of the Lib Dems. Ewing says it's still too early to be "sitting doing the crossword and watching daytime TV just yet." But Hong Kong Phooey, Baillie is back. She held her Dumbarton seat with a majority of 1,786 over the SNP. Who will she nod at as Labour leader? However, the deputy leader of Scottish Labour admits the results across Scotland have clearly been disappointing.

Do not let them reformat your memory. “Who stormed Berlin? The Americans, perhaps? The British? The French? We lost one million one hundred thousand people at Stalingrad alone. How many did Great Britain lose? 400,000? Less than half a million for the United States as well. 75-80% of the Wehrmacht’s total strength was destroyed by the Red Army of the Soviet Union. Have you completely forgotten that, or what?” — President Putin
