I am very interested to know what alternative terms are being used instead of “disadvantaged” plz🙏🏾 I do not like this term at all. It is often used as a term of deficit rather than describing those as disadvantaged by the system -you know not the ‘normative’ groups. Thoughts?

People from Bangladeshi and Pakistani backgrounds are over three times more likely to live in the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK. Less than 25% of working-class people from Bangladeshi and Pakistani backgrounds make it into professional jobs.

@_dxrxthy_ “We have a world where our learning, teaching and understanding of who or what is worthy…” - yeah, we (hate I have to use this plural pronoun) really paid attention :/

sometimes I think about how I spent a year letting an organisation know that it’s important to value people of colour and give them credit, only to have them remove credit for a campaign statement that I wrote but kept the statement on their website

Cultural competency training can’t provide the experience of feeling confident that a healthcare professional can, if required, (correctly) recognise and address one’s cultural background. Homogenous Wellbeing services are not transcendent to this but rather, fails its students.

The latest season of Coke Studio is unreal — the music and aesthetics are so very good. I love it.

@_dxrxthy_ Fk! My heart goes out to you, Doz. I wonder if these structures rely on you being way too fking good for it - so as to be excused of never qwhite giving the due consideration you and other poc need. Notwithstanding that, you were, are, and will always be too good for ‘us’. <3

it’s been exactly a year since I was the victim of a rather traumatic hate crime as president. the targeting of hyper visible black people especially women in student unions is something that i don’t think people really grasp

Islamophobia is not only rampant in the Conservative Party, it’s rife within British politics more widely. So if you oppose Islamophobia, speak out when Muslim Labour colleagues and I raise it, not only when the Conservatives are guilty of it.

@D4NT4KY1 (original) virtue signallers with a shamelessly unbounded capacity to abnegate responsibility - feels awfully current within the empire loving, English polity today.

Of course, not least and sickeningly so, those academics who benefitted by willingly rejecting Williams’s thesis, perpetuating the idea that Britain, European economic growth had nothing to do with slavery & colonialism

Racism is not “contrary to the British tradition” — How many non-Black academics have been (unduly) credited to making any links between capitalism & slavery, off the back of this suppression? I wonder. theguardian.com/world/2022/jan…

@EDI_SarahMQ ‘Team Culture’ - ??!?? - just the use of it, let alone within the context of an interview — hegemonic. Worrying stuff!

@rsrsdexpress … and why they are concerned about ‘fit’. Spoke to someone about a potential vacancy in their team, he told me they were careful who they selected as they had to have someone who had the same humour and interests as the others to maintain the ‘team culture’ 🤨

I reckon asking candidates underrepresented in your workforce — what their strengths are/why they are a ‘good fit’ — disadvantages them, as frankly the ones overrepresented have had the privilege of not dealing with an impostor syndrome; discussions at work!
