@Alsadius @BriannaWu I’m generally more sympathetic to Israel. But what Brianna said is just false. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were, in fact, expelled. Obviously there are much worse crimes happening around that time. But we shouldn’t lie about the past, regardless.

@rule12f @BriannaWu Large absolute numbers, but a pretty small percentage of the total exodus. In the context of post-WW2 population transfers, it was not especially large or aggressive. Many others were much worse.

Surreal to see a Democratic mayor rewriting history for the Islamists hellbent on eradicating Jews. Here is the truth. There was no Nakba. In 1948, after rejecting their own state, the Arabs tried to slaughter the Jews. The Jews won. The descendants of the Arabs that didn’t try to murder anyone are Israeli citizens today.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

Today marks Nakba Day, an annual day of remembrance to commemorate the expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians between 1947 and 1949 during the creation of the State of Israel and the year that followed. Inea is a New Yorker and a Nakba survivor. She shared her story with us — one of home, tradition and memory over generations.

@BriannaWu It is just incorrect that the Israel did not expect Palestinians from its territory in large numbers. Regardless of whether they tried to murder anyone. You must know this.

This is the thing—it’s not 2016 in the District anymore. We need to diversify our economy and bring in more private sector investment if we’re going to create jobs, keep and attract more residents, and sustain our fiscal situation.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

DC is a distinct city facing distinct problems and a distinct choice between two candidates, only one of whom understands that. Too many people are just trying to copy and paste a formula based on other places’ problems. slowboring.com/p/how-to-know-…

(To be clear I meant that most of the urbanists I follow spend more time talking about JLG than McDuffie but that's selection bias on my part)

Do I follow any urbanists who are affirmatively endorsing Kenyan McDuffie? Most of them I gather are enthusiastically voting against Janeese Lewis George.

Many people don’t seem to understand how far DC has come on social policy over that time. We have free, near universal pre-k Paid parental leave The country’s most generous state EITC Medicaid + the free Healthy DC plan up to 200% of poverty A renter’s tax credit
Josh Freed@jsfreed

Irony here is that private investment, coupled with very sound fiscal management of DC, contributed to DC growth, expansion of tax base, increase in revenue and ability to invest in city from late 90s until Trump II.

One of my big fears about this election is that, if we truly screw up our economy and municipal finances, we will have to cut back more on the underappreciated good things this city already does.

@DouthatNYT The people who actually think this are very outspoken and active in the discourse. Their views are not particularly widespread - which is why the number of women who have children (not the number of children) has remained basically the same.

Something I struggle with is how to assess the impact of "don't bring kids into this effed-up world" anti-natalism on fertility trends -- since it seems necessarily marginal at the macro level but you encounter it all the time in public conversation. x.com/LeahLibresco/s…

Unusually explicit connection from the rejection of children to the death drive at the end of this reader roundup in the NYT. Begins with the usual “Who would want to bring children into a world…” and ends, well…

@LeahLibresco In fact, by a lot of objective metrics (child mortality, poverty levels, crime levels, carbon emissions, purchasing power) life in America has never been better than in this era. That’s true for libs and conservatives alike.

I don’t know that many people who get fired up about the stakes of the DC mayoral race, but DC is at a critical inflection point right now and JLG’s diagnosis of “despite DOGE and the Downtown Shutdown, let’s slow growth even further while incinerating money” ain’t the way out.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

Not sure we've talked enough about JLG's plan to spend more on schools while having fewer instructional days, dismantling a successful teacher evaluation program, and reduce focus on student learning in favor of "joy."

You know @Janeese4DC is getting desperate when her campaign or dark money SuperPAC backers are testing negative messages in a poll. This arrived to my phone a few minutes ago.

@PaulSkallas The vast majority of people consume the World Cup on TV and for them it will be fine, maybe even great. The in person experience will be a disaster.
