@Alsadius @BriannaWu I’m generally more sympathetic to Israel. But what Brianna said is just false. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were, in fact, expelled.
Obviously there are much worse crimes happening around that time. But we shouldn’t lie about the past, regardless.

In the context of post-WW2 population transfers, it was not especially large or aggressive. Many others were much worse.

Surreal to see a Democratic mayor rewriting history for the Islamists hellbent on eradicating Jews.
Here is the truth. There was no Nakba. In 1948, after rejecting their own state, the Arabs tried to slaughter the Jews. The Jews won.
The descendants of the Arabs that didn’t try to murder anyone are Israeli citizens today.

Irony here is that private investment, coupled with very sound fiscal management of DC, contributed to DC growth, expansion of tax base, increase in revenue and ability to invest in city from late 90s until Trump II.

@DouthatNYT The people who actually think this are very outspoken and active in the discourse. Their views are not particularly widespread - which is why the number of women who have children (not the number of children) has remained basically the same.

Something I struggle with is how to assess the impact of "don't bring kids into this effed-up world" anti-natalism on fertility trends -- since it seems necessarily marginal at the macro level but you encounter it all the time in public conversation.

@LeahLibresco In fact, by a lot of objective metrics (child mortality, poverty levels, crime levels, carbon emissions, purchasing power) life in America has never been better than in this era. That’s true for libs and conservatives alike.

I don’t know that many people who get fired up about the stakes of the DC mayoral race, but DC is at a critical inflection point right now and JLG’s diagnosis of “despite DOGE and the Downtown Shutdown, let’s slow growth even further while incinerating money” ain’t the way out.
