Davis is perfectly clear in WRC that while the myth of the "black rapist" was invoked w great success as a general defense of the practice of lynching, the large majority of actual lynchings did not involve accusations of rape.

by constructing a deviant “other” (in this case the criminal, the sexual deviant, and the predator all in one) you are able to do anything to anyone you sort into that otherness, which is why lynchings occurred as mass popular events where the audience felt righteous and gleeful
