@RutgersAltRoute Formal conversations with colleagues during monthly meetings. However it is the informal hallways conversations with peers that aid in addressing situations real time

@RutgersAltRoute My biggest challenge is that as someone now well in their 50s I have developed a lot of learned traits. Fortunately, I have spent most of my life in careers that have kept me constantly learning / challenged, so there is balance and openness

This morning's 5th and final Q is on assessment #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
“You can enhance or destroy students’ desire to succeed in school more quickly and permanently through your use of assessment than with any other tool you have at your disposal.” – Dr. Rick Stiggins

@RutgersAltRoute As a high school math teacher, I am constantly approached by students who, "don't get it". This is an opportunity for me have them break down a problem rather than just provide an answer. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

Feedback is a compass for improvement and not all feedback is created equally. For Q4 share your content area and consider your best practices and those you would like to try #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

English

@RutgersAltRoute Expressing belief that a new concept is something that students will be able to get with some effort is key. Teachers are sales people and need to project PMA (positive mental attitude). #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
English

Framing, or how teachers introduce new concepts and tasks to students, is the focus of Q3. Framing can steer students to a fixed or growth mindset. It helps students feel free to be a work in progress as they learn. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

English

@RutgersAltRoute I start the year with the ghost buster symbol over the phrase, "not a math person". Homework (much of which can be done during class) is graded on completion, not correctness. Attempted participation is praised, right or wrong. #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset
English

For Q2, consider the expectations you communicate to students (verbal and nonverbal) through your classroom climate, course material & response opportunities #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute I meant the mindset survey referenced in the last question of the form

@RutgersAltRoute The biggest challenge is breaking down the fixed mindset barrier. By high school, so many students have the set mindset they are "not a math person". Key is starting with small wins and building up confidence. Replying to "I don't know" with "not yet" #Teacher #GrowthMindset
English

Teachers have the power to influence the mindset of students.
As you answer #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset Question 1, consider your own experience, readings, and what Carol Dweck refers to as the power of “yet” (youtu.be/hiiEeMN7vbQ?si…)

@RutgersAltRoute @ruthsjim I teach math, primarily high school geometre

For Question 1 (Q1), reflect on your experience and current practices for creating an inclusive learning environment for students with learning disabilities. #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute Q5 #TeacherEd #SpecialEd. Ugh, smartphones. Most teachers have some sort of smartphone policy but they are inconsistent. Allowing students to take a picture is a good use of phone as long as it then gets put away
English

For our final question (Q5) consider your classroom AND school-wide behavior management and discipline policies. #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute Q4. Class culture is key. I start my HS math class year preaching how we learn from mistakes and it is ok to make them. Learn by asking questions of your shoulder buddy (seating) and try to help each other. Patience in letting them respond and then ask breakdown questions
English

Teachers play a role in helping students learn and practice self-awareness skills and communicate their understanding.
For Q4 think about what you’ve done or ideas you’d like to implement to help students be self-advocates, agents of their own success #TeacherEd #SpecialEd

English

@RutgersAltRoute Q3 targeted seating is big for me. In classes where I have a para the aid sitting in the back with a group that needs regular prompts but shuns being in front. Up front I have students who need to stay engaged and leverage them for class participation #teacher #specialed
English

For Q3 be specific content area & how you support student success, for example, your classroom environment, assignments, and assessments #TeacherEd #SpecialEd
