@MickyOwens88 I don’t disagree, I didn’t think either of them were fouls. I’m fine with annoyance over consistency, but some of the outrage (not from Mel) that this was a travesty of justice is nonsense. Egypt got themselves 2-0 up with 10 to go (impressive af!) and just couldn’t hold on.

@ryan3levis I dont agree with that. numerous stuff went against egypt. the ref set the tone with the soft free to cancel out the egypt goal. if he had used that, egypt would have had a pen and argentina goal would have been ruled out. 'they scored anyway' is nonsense.

I just don’t see how anything in this game warrants this sort of narrative tbh, while agreeing with the wider disdain for VAR. The only one is Egypt’s ruled out second but they went 2-0 up anyway. They just got done out in the end by the pressure and Messi. It happens.

I love football. I love late drama. I love comebacks. I love knowing that anything is possible and feeling like we’re watching a steady stream of some of the greatest games ever. I do not love how we are expected to ignore the inconsistencies in officiating and the interventions from VAR, which have largely been heavily weighted towards certain teams and its players. If you’ve watched and followed everything in this World Cup and are still subscribed the idea that it’s all fair, delusionville must be a lovely place to reside.

@MelissaReddy_ Woah, the Iran stuff is of course abhorrent and goes beyond sporting unfairness. Genuinely wasn’t being snide. Just saying as someone who was truly happy with either outcome, I didn’t feel there was something dubious going on. Not beyond what officiating always feels like, now.

The tweet wasn’t completely about that game or it would have been directly framed as such (just as one example, go back to Arg-Austria) and neither it is solely about the fortune the defending champions have repeatedly enjoyed. (Also, I love watching Messi, but still.). There has been a long list of examples since the group phase weighted towards bigger team/superstar, and in the wider point about fairness: the treatment of Iran, the Balogun decision… but since you’ve zoned in on this particular game, did you analyse all the fouls given/not given throughout the match, how the officiating was handled in general or just the headline moments?

I’m just smiling ear to ear here. Match of the tournament. So gutted for Mo and Egypt who were truly brilliant for 80 mins but Argentina are just endlessly great World Cup vibes and I love them for it.
