One of Australia’s top renewables developers has slashed around 30 staff from its key construction division as planning bottlenecks and rising costs continue to stifle investment growth in a sector critical to the Albanese government’s energy plans. afr.com/policy/energy-…

Tim saw an opportunity for a headline. Lesser men would have waited to see how the US attack pans out, but Tim didn't hesitate. He even wrote of the Islamic regime in the past tense, as if the death of its leader meant the govt was gone, a sign of conviction in the mold of John H

The world is now a safer place with the Ayatollah gone. The Islamic regime treated the Iranian people brutally, exports terrorism, subjugates women and murders homosexuals. Now is the time for the Iranian people to take control of their destiny.

In August 2024, one of Australia’s most controversial environmental groups launched a legal challenge to an Andrew Forrest-backed wind project in northern Queensland. 18 months and $600,000 later, the organisation – technically – no longer exists. afr.com/policy/energy-…

@FootnotesGuy This story describes the sources of new power supply due to come online in the next two years and their potential impact on the grid. It also points out that underinvestment in gas generation will be a long term problem during relatively infrequent but high impact events

Of course @ryan_cropp has a piece on how batteries will 'oust gas' on the day that batteries do this comical 'hi-bye' at the front-end of a demand spike, while gas carries on keeping SA's air-con running. The 'capacity' takeover cited won't solve this endurance problem.

Last night was a close call for SA, with prices around $20k/MWh for 2.5 hours, from 7:05pm to 9:35pm. It can be very hot, with no sun, and completely still. The pitfalls of weather-dependent energy. And the batteries were all done long before prices eased. Quick 🧵. 1/

@FootnotesGuy @ryan_cropp @FinancialReview I lost power from 816pm Wednesday night, when it was still around 39°C here in Vic. Didn't get power back for 22.5 hrs. A lot of areas lost power that day/night in Victoria alone. No storms, no high winds. Just a grid that failed. Was it due to solar pumping too much in?

7th Jan: Prices only spike to $1400 in evening... Headline: Rooftop solar saves grid! 26 Nov: $20k spike for four intervals at noon, whilst being exported to Vic at a loss... Complete cluster. Headline? Crickets. I expect better from AFR. 3/3 x.com/FootnotesGuy/s…

Extremely important article from @WattClarity. Just NSW consumers paying Victoria 30 bucks to take power off their hands they paid generators 20 grand to make. It happened last Wednesday. Because a cloud came over Sydney. 1/ wattclarity.com.au/articles/2025/…

The speed at which climate people have publicly pivoted from “Australia must host COP” to “actually it’s a good that we’re not hosting” is truly something to behold

“People who attend UN climate conferences are loathe to describe any of them as a failure.” Michael Jacobs telling it straight here. There is now a powerful and organised global resistance to climate action. What is to be done?
Inside Story@insidestorymag

“The schism in global climate politics revealed at COP30 will surely make Australia’s negotiating task even more difficult next year. But that may no longer be the point. If COP31 can prioritise implementation & investment it may make greater progress…” inside.org.au/not-so-good-cop

The Australian energy market operator has published its 10 yr outlook for investment requirements to maintain reliability in the NEM. The good news is that if everything goes according to plan we will be ok. The bad news is that this means everything has to go according to plan.

Labor says it wants to lead on climate & host the COP31 climate conference. But it just approved the massive North West Shelf gas extension & now there’s no climate ambassador in place. COP31 is an opportunity for 🇦🇺 to step up & make the right decisions afr.com/policy/energy-…
