Seven rail cars transporting hot asphalt and molten sulfur crashed into Montana’s Yellowstone River on June 24 after a railway bridge collapsed. The bridge collapse is approximately 110 miles downstream from Yellowstone National Park.
Preliminary water and air quality testing, conducted by contractors for Montana Rail Link, the train’s operator, didn’t show any sign of petroleum hydrocarbons. Montana Department of Environmental Quality spokesperson Kevin Stone said in a statement, ‘Water quality testing will continue until the cleanup is complete and at this time there are no known risks to the public drinking water.’
Officials are reportedly still working out how to get the rail cars out of the water, and it’s not clear what caused the bridge to collapse, but retired University of California, Berkeley engineering professor Robert Bea told @APNews that it’s likely the record flooding and heavy river flows Yellowstone has experienced contributed.
TU is monitoring the impact in coordination with @MontanaFWP, and we have our network of staff and chapters poised to respond when and where appropriate. We are encouraging anyone with information on potential spill-related fish kills or other environmental concerns to contact the Montana Department of Environmental Protection's Disaster pollution hotline at (406) 444-0379.
More information from @MontanaTU coming soon.

Today I’m at @PEMAHQ to talk about ongoing efforts to expand #COVID19 testing across Pennsylvania.
Testing is crucial because it helps us understand how COVID impacts Pennsylvania and allows us to take proactive measures to stop the spread of the illness.
