As I get ready to celebrate Nowruz (Persian New Year) tonight with my parents at San Francisco City Hall, I'm thinking of my uncle who is no longer with us. Cyrus Salehi was our closest relative living in America. He was murdered. And it forever impacted my life and upbringing.

Two years ago, a group of pro-Palestinian protestors blocked Golden Gate bridge for four hours to bring attention to the genocide going on in Gaza. Protesters have blocked Golden Gate bridge for decades -- famously, AIDS activists did so in 1989 to bring attention to the mass die off that was happening then. What's different this time is the draconian charges that have been brought down on the protesters. Seven of those activists are currently standing trial and facing up to 15 years in prison. They are being charged with "false imprisonment," which is a first for this kind of action. At a time that Trump is cracking down on free speech and political protest, it makes no sense for San Francisco, the home of protests like this, to be cracking down at home. The DA should drop these charges.

To everyone disappointed and upset with this verdict (as am I)... it is the job of the DA's Office to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt to the jury. They did not convince the jury. As we tried to tell people, the felony trial win rate has been terribly low under Jenkins.

Sadly, this act adds to the continuous military attacks against the civilian population and places of worship in Gaza. I again call for an immediate halt to the barbarism of the war and for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. I renew my appeal to the international community to observe humanitarian law and to respect the obligation to protect civilians, as well as the prohibition of collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force and the forced displacement of the population.

Tragic news continues to arrive in these days from the Middle East, especially from Gaza. I express my profound sadness regarding last Thursday’s attack by the Israeli army on the Catholic Parish of the Holy Family in Gaza City, which as you know killed three Christians and gravely wounded others. I pray for the victims, Saad Issa Kostandi Salameh, Foumia Issa Latif Ayyad, Najwa Ibrahim Latif Abu Daoud, and I am particularly close to their families and to all the parishioners.

Today our own US Senator, Alex Padilla, was detained by federal agents at a federal building in Los Angeles. I have seen the video—it is shocking. I am hearing every day from San Franciscans who are scared for their safety. Handcuffing a US Senator for asking questions sends a chilling message. @Maine2S92692 This "minor failure" is a misdemeanor offense. PC 11142. Feel free to look it up. The DA you fawn over sends people to jail for — according to you — these "relatively minor" failures. However you try to spin it, a sitting DA facing consequences by the State Bar is a big deal.
