@MattZeitlin Too true. On the subject, it's unforgivable that "The Crown" completely skipped over Callaghan.

@stats_feed It's sad, if predictable, that Brits in the responses discount this stat, insist that it's simply exchange rates, GDP is meaningless, etc. You can bet if it was the other direction (France surpassing UK), these Eeyores would 100% agree with the stat

Canada needs both languages. Anglos who work in Quebec, especially CEOs, need to actually make the effort to learn French. That being said, French speaking Quebecois are quite picky about the level of fluency from an Anglo before they will respond in French.

Let me use an example. I was in a conversation recently with an engineer and a data scientist. The data scientist explained that an AI system we were working on was behaving unexpectedly because a table’s schema was incorrectly specified. The table was named something like carts, and the columns were cart_id, customer_id, and date. The engineer said, “That is a perfectly constructed schema.” The data scientist responded, “No, there is no way to tell by looking at this data what the data means. Either the table needs to be named something like “cart_adds” or the date column needs to be named something like “add_to_cart_date” but if it has neither, the system could interpret that as cart created date, last add to cart date, cart checkout date, or anything else related to carts and customers.” But these kinds of schemas are what is in the wild. We have to build to these schemas, not to idealized schemas that have perfect, transparent data models, and no greasy fingerprints from a decade of analysts monkeying with it.

Part of the reason we have seen no progress on AI in data is because very few engineers have seen a real relational data warehouse. Try to find one online — a real one with a few hundred tables, thousands of columns, and layers of transforms. It doesn’t exist.

I sincerely hope that mine is just one of many portraits of Prime Ministers from both parties that will continue to be hung in the Parliament of Canada for decades and centuries to come […] but that will require that in these perilous times both parties whatever their differences, come together to preserve the independence and unity of this blessed land.

@nfergus @nfergus is a brilliant writer and speaker. While he was "in opposition" his takes were refreshing. Now that the red team is ascendant, he is defending the indefensible and making excuses for bullies. Dr. Ferguson is better than this.

Trump never seriously meant to annex Greenland or to impose new tariffs on the Europeans. Why would he when the U.S. already enjoys all the military access to the frigid island it could every possibly need? Fact: Trump means what he says on Truth Social only about half the time. 3/8

There is a rapidly forming narrative in the European and liberal media that the Europeans “won Davos”: primarily by getting Trump to “de-escalate” his demand that the United States acquire Greenland from Denmark. 1/8

@vesperdigital The responses from Canadians, or "Canadians", in this thread are shocking. Sure, there's lots that needs to be fixed in Canada, but the self-loathing is sick. Whatever ails Canada, photocopying what is happening in the US right now isn't the answer.

I have always respected Michael Knowles for what he stands for. But I have to say this. This may be the most irresponsible, low resolution take I have ever seen from him. To suggest the U.S. would act toward Canada as it might toward Venezuela is not just unserious. It is diplomatically illiterate. Canada is not a totalitarian regime. It is a NATO ally and a democratic partner that has consistently condemned Maduro. For the U.S. to even utter such a threat would shred its international commitments. Violating the UN Charter, the North Atlantic Treaty, and the OECD Convention in one stroke is not "tough talk." It is a recipe for instant global isolation and economic suicide. Frankly, it is embarrassing to see someone usually sharp trade nuance for sensationalism. Do better, Michael. This is not edgy. It is just dumb.

@ztisdale Why would we want to be part of a country that increasingly seems to despise us? The Americans who express an opinion about Canada these days are either insulting or want to chop up our country for parts. I have zero interest in joining people who despise me for no reason.

America is not our enemy. Canada couldn't exist without the United States. It's time to join them and become the 51st State. It makes the most sense over the long term, and better for economics, freedom, and security. (No, this is not globalism, and no, we don't want Mexico.)

Winter in Arizona usually means snowbirds, busy restaurants, and Canadians spending money in our communities. But this year they’re staying home because Trump insulted them and slapped tariffs on their country. Arizona tourism is paying the price.
