@jon_wertheim Good article. But not holding my breath on @usta to do anything other than vague platitudes and then retreating to the backroom to count their cash and hand out bigger salaries to their executives.

@KeithSmithNBA What would you recommend for the offseason? Serious question. I know it was supposed to be a “gap” year but lots of flame outs in the playoffs other than 2024.

@ryanruzz5 Holiday didn't even play like that when he was in Boston. I loved what he brought to the Celtics, but he was an off-ball player for them.

PG has shot like 60% from deep over the last few games. Embiid and Maxey are the main guys, but PG has been great for the Sixers.

@GwashburnGlobe They need a true PG. Thats what makes the offense move and keeps the Js from playing hero ball.

@PatrickMcEnroe @WSJopinion How about changing the format to attractive more US athletes and fans. The college tennis format is not fan friendly nor is it attractive to young athletes. Make is faster paced, less flights, and not last over 2 hrs.

College sports is the Wild West. College tennis helped shape my life. Now the sport is facing a serious question: Where are all the Americans in American college tennis? Thanks to @WSJopinion for giving me the space to make the case.
Wall Street Journal Opinion@WSJopinion

Where are all the Americans in American college tennis? The professionalization of college sports is reshaping athletic programs beyond football and basketball, writes @PatrickMcEnroe on.wsj.com/4dk2DZi

@JTweetsTennis @PatrickMcEnroe @WSJopinion The problem is college tennis is NOT TV friendly. 6 random courts on TV for singles. Bouncing back & forth from court to court. It doesn’t work. It’s why college tennis needed to be creative with their format years ago to make it more fan and TV friendly. other sport made changes

@PatrickMcEnroe @WSJopinion There won’t be any roster spots for anyone if the sport doesn’t get on TV. Almost every other NCAA championship is on ESPN (exclusive rights holder), but not tennis. Any calls you can make at ESPN to change this?

@Marc_DAmico The off-season. Need a true PG. They don’t have that since Jrue left. It’s what makes the offense go and not fall into iso ball.

I'm old enough to remember a whole lot of pundits saying the Celtics were the cream of the crop in the East after G4. A couple rough losses since, for sure, but let's not act like Boston isn't capable of taking G7 at home and making everyone forget about these last 3 days.

@John_Karalis Tatum. It was a fun team that played free until he came back. Since it’s been a stalled offense full of iso ball. Just like every playoff year other than 2024.

The Celtics offense scored less than 100 points nine times this season, or about 11% of the time. They've now done it in three of their six games against the Sixers

@AdamMKaufman A fun team that had a nice offensive rhythm. Then Tatum came back and ball movement stopped and it’s slow ball.

Just a different Celtics team. You could see all the signs on Tuesday. No bench points other than PP which is crazy. 1 off rebound. Five forced TOs that’s it. Dumb fouls. Slow it down offense. They threw away what worked all season. Philly getting way better shots too.

Game 5 pretty much a carbon copy of Game 2, #76ers dominate 4Q and win 113-97, Game 6 Thursday in Philly. Tatum 24, Brown 22, Pritchard 12; Embiid 33, Maxey 25, Grimes 18, George 16. BOS 3 for 22 FG in the 4Q. Worst stretch of the season.

@ChrisForsberg_ Sixers will win in 7. How May times do we have to see this movie. 2024 was an outlier because of Holiday and Prozingis. The Js fade in crunch time and become selfish. Break up this core.

@KeithSmithNBA Without a Holiday or Porzingis the Js always come back to this iso ball style in crunch time. 2024 was an outlier because of the leaders around them. Now crunch time is hero ball time. They won’t get out of the second round. Maybe not even this round.

Here's the thing: It was not shooting threes that cost them tonight. They started taking forced midrangers and no-hope drives.
Mark Maguire@markm72homeruns

@KeithSmithNBA When are they going to learn they can’t just shoot threes all the time. They do this to themselves.

I thought winning the title a couple of years ago got rid of this. That team played with an edge and was focused the entire season, including the playoffs. Nothing easy, I guess.

@itsAntWright They cannot shoot. They need shooters this offseason. Everything on offense is difficult in the playoffs when teams clamp down on defense. Need shooters to open up spacing in the middle.

@CTennisNation The death of college tennis is near. As predicted by many since 2020. But the old guard couldn’t be bothered to make changes or even strategize on what could be done to increase fan &donor support. Instead it was “we don’t need to do that” while @ITA_Tennis and @usta were asleep

🚨 BREAKING: Saint Louis is discontinuing both men’s and women’s tennis programs, per release. After a “thorough and strategic review,” Saint Louis has officially discontinued both programs effective immediately, per AD Chris May. This comes just days after Arkansas made the same move.
