The surest path to lower rents for everyone? Building enough homes so landlords have to compete for tenants—rather than the other way around.

Bold climate action is existentially important, *and* it's economically beneficial. As @EmilyAssembly and @Gonzalez4NY argue in @CityAndStateNY, let's reject the false choice between CLCPA implementation and cost savings.

In @CityLimitsNews, I urge @GovKathyHochul to join the State Legislature in expanding the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP) pilot, a state-funded housing voucher program, to $250 million in the forthcoming state budget. 🔗 ⬇️

This story is HORRIFIC. This DACA recipient was brought here by his parents in 1999 when he was 8 years old. He is a laboratory scientist who's had DACA since 2012. Now he's languishing in an ICE detention center because the Trump admin failed to process his renewal in time!

ICE seizes DACA recipient on way to visit premature baby in NICU. Trump admin is not renewing "Dreamers" who were given legal status as children to stay in U.S. -- says they can now be detained and deported. @lbarronlopez ms.now/news/ice-detai…

🚨STATEMENT: Immigrant Advocates Applaud the End of Criminization of Bicycle and E-Bike Offenses "Nearly every New Yorker relies on bicycle deliveries, yet the people making those deliveries are too often criminalized for minor traffic violations." @HeyItsMurad

I am thrilled to receive the endorsement of @citizenactionny—we both run on grassroots support and want to see New Yorkers thrive. Let's keep fighting together for affordable housing and healthcare, bold climate action, an end to mass incarceration, and a stronger democracy 💪

Just for reference, if the average apartment was rented for 2 years, and was then vacant for a month before the next lease began, that would be a 4% vacancy rate. 2% vacancy is insane.
Tahra Hoops@TahraHoops

The supply side of this is terrible. Inventory is down 26% in Manhattan with vacancy below 2% for over a year. Every workaround, caps, STR bans, ignores the obvious: there aren't enough units. Build more housing.

My *too long for Twitter* thoughts 👇 ➡️ Often we throw money at problems without caring about outcomes. That's dumb—but that's not this. ➡️ Bigger investments in low-threshold shelter are helping. ➡️ To actually end homelessness we must build a ton of housing to lower rents.
Mike Bird@Birdyword

Absolutely astounding figures from the NY state comptroller: spending on services for the NYC street homeless population ran to $81,705 per person last year, up from $28,428 pp 6yrs ago. Figures do not include all kinds of other spending, supportive housing, policing costs etc.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday that the city would lower the speed limit to 15 miles per hour outside more than 800 schools this year and that his administration would do the same at all eligible schools by the end of his first term.

New monthly report: Median rents in Manhattan have hit $5k/month for first time ever. +6% over past year. Median rents in Brooklyn have also reached an all-time high $4,296, +7.5%. The report cites "the tightest inventory seen in nearly four years" as cause for rapid rise in rents. Translation: We desperately need to build more housing, including affordable housing.
