Frankly if you're a piece of shit online, I'm gunna assume you're a piece of shit in real life. You shouldn't need the pressure of in person interaction to make you behave like a decent human being.
Zach 🍻@gildedprairie

Saying that DSA has a "fetish" for in-person deliberation is so funny when the last 48 hours shows that some are incapable of *not* spewing pure vitriol towards their fellow members online. It's a lot more difficult to be a piece of shit when you are talking face-to-face.

Groundwork Steerer and Aparna for DC Field Coordinator Carl R. describes the value of DSA getting involved with campaigns early. Early leg work is what makes the DSA Difference- from City Council to President, the first mover has the best opportunity to set the terms.

@postlexical Every person who retweets this with this commentary ignores the part about how it's materially infeasible to hold regular meetings of thousands of people.

Replacing in-person face to face socialization & deliberation with atomized and mediated remote decision making is a recipe for toxicity, disengagement, and political underdevelopment. Being physically in the same space as other people really does make a significant difference

There's a fetish in DSA for in person deliberation and I don't think people realize how unsustainable and materially difficult that is for chapters once they reach a certain size.

Jesus Christ, I come back from being in the woods for 4 days and everything is exploding. Everyone go join your chapter's member engagement crew. They need the help

@EwanBen "break it up" as if breaking it up isn't a massive endeavor that changed the character and capacity of the chapter.

@PuckFupett69 We did but we also had other struggles so we didn't utilize rr the best that we could.

@sFz_Marcato You guys have in person chapter meetings based on Robert’s Rules? My chapter may have been a bit unique in that we always specialized in parliamentary procedure in student government as part of the Greek ruling coalition so had a lot of procedure-heads.

DSA members have never been part of a fraternity and it shows. My fraternity used to have absolutely wild debates around elections and various motions. There’s nothing remotely as fun as in-person debates under Robert’s Rules of Order. I’ve considered joining DSA just for that.

@BetterWorld86 I mean I DO want all chapters to be thousands of people strong. It's a problem we'll have to address

@wrappingline Workplace and neighborhood organizing is far more important that trying to do "in person debates."

See this I don't agree with at all; this is why we need workplace organizing, neighborhood organizing, and branches and structures scaled and located to literally physically meet people where they're at. And as we take power to physically restructure cities to be less isolating.

@sFz_Marcato gotta start by saying your math is off. 750 is 5%. 0.5% is 75. I think all meetings should be hybrid. that alleviates some of the space issues. I also think that we should have multiple opportunities to discuss this to accommodate people’s schedules and differing availability.

Like NYC is 15k migs. Let's say 0.5% come to a general body meeting. Thats 750 people. How is a chapter supposed to a) find a venue to host this and b) afford to rent it? And presumably we want more that half a percent of our membership attending meetings, right?

@sFz_Marcato If you have 15,000 MIGS, then 0.5% is 75 members, not 750. But your larger point is right, and that's the rationale behind electing delegates: creating a smaller group of people who can deliberate. The alternative approach is mass democracy without in-person deliberation.

@HipsterRoberts @sFz_Marcato 75 people speaking is actually kind of realistic, depending on the duration of time the meeting is and how long people are allowed to speak. That said, a large majority of people don’t want to get up to speak. ppl can then deliberate further after meetings on the forum

@station_zzz I mean I open them in case something important comes through. Polls are a tool like anything else. I don't see a compelling reason to not use them when trying to see how membership is feeling. We do this in Union organizing already, I don't see why DSA should be different

@sFz_Marcato Is it a vote or a poll? DSA is not a polling firm - and training members to see it as one devalues orgamizational unity. Additionally.. contacting and reaching chapter members is more art than science. (When was the last time you opened an email from DSA National?)

I also don't get why people are up in arms over polls. We conduct polls all the time in union organizing, why is this any different?

to those who think an all member poll would be overly influenced by caucuses and whip lists: a) explain the problem of reaching out to people and trying to convince them b) ask yourself, who is more subservient to caucuses- the NPC and DSA convention, or all members?

@tarxan1936 A chapter's power comes from it's ability to organize the labor power of it's members. Splitting large chapters into dozens of smaller ones would cripple the organizing ability of everyone at large.
