Dominguez-Chavarria was on his way to school with his stepfather, Valente Ayala, on the 215 Beltway in Henderson, near Las Vegas
Authorities say the shooting happened after Johns and Ayala jockeyed for position on the freeway
The two men rolled down their windows and got into a verbal dispute while trying to pass each other
Johns allegedly pointed a handgun toward the backseat and fired, killing Dominguez-Chavarria
During a court hearing, a victim’s advocate said Johns smiled and laughed at the boy’s family
Johns’ attorney denied the allegations and said his client is taking the case seriously
