Even those who are aware of it still have to intentionally combat this worry which creates cycles of fluctuating motivation Best approach to dealing with this seems to be pointing out the subtle signs of progress in order to break their faith in that poorly conditioned intuition

People genuinely have a natural expectation of things happening faster, even when they try to tell themselves otherwise. When doing the grind work doesn't manifest itself into visible progress within the intuited timeframe, there's a worry that no progress is being made at all.
