When the late journalist Dominic Kabbah-Kargbo reported in December 1998 that rebels had descended on Waterloo “like manna from heaven” and were advancing towards Freetown, he was hounded and pilloried by the authorities, dismissed as spreading false news. Days later, my dear friend Sulaiman Momodu bravely reported that the city’s last line of defence had collapsed at Waterloo itself, and indeed the rebels ( or sobels) were marching towards town. For that truth, the then Information Minister declared him wanted, and SMT, as he is fondly called, had to hide for days in the bunkers at Fourah Bay College. That was 27 years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. Yes, the rebels came. And I can still hear the haunting rhythm of the AK‑47, echoing like the Municipal School bell : “boys! girls! come to school”—repeatedly, relentlessly. Today, as the President declares January 18 as Remembrance Day, and calls on citizens to wear a white ribbon or a piece of white cloth as a symbol of peace, I stood with the UN Country Team as the @icpncsl Executive Secretary, @sallysamai bestowed upon us this gesture of remembrance. The war was horrific. It was brutish. It was dehumanizing. And as I pinned that white ribbon, I whispered to myself: Never again. I hope. #SaloneX #SaloneTwitter
