It's pretty funny that these fake North Korean workers are apparently sometimes doing a better job than actual employees. The scam here is basically doing competent work and receiving payment in exchange (plus some ID fraud, of course).

@_AashishReddy The facetious answer is that it works very well indeed for Leopold, and anyone who copy-trades Situational Awareness LP.

I’ve never seen any discourse about this but I did notice a while ago that Leopold is running an AGI hedge fund on the basis of his Situational Awareness on what’s coming, while engaged to someone presumably with tons of insider info. Curious how this works, from people who know?

@Duderichy In the early innings I was skeptical of this fund as a levered beta vehicle but his 13Fs show he has lots of Alpha. How could he not? Sleeps next to Anthropic Chief of Staff, friends with Ilya, Dylan Patel, Dwarkesh, etc. his informational flow is elite. I would love to be an LP.

Hold on to your butts, it’s a bona fide round of underrated/overrated! Henry Oliver, the man who has converted 30,0000 non-literary nerds into devotees of great literature, sits down with Tyler to dissect Shakespeare's unhappy comedy. Does Measure for Measure repay a Girardian reading? Henry will tell you, with conviction, why it does not. Plus: what Jane Austen stole from Adam Smith, why Swift was the greatest PR man in history, why Ayn Rand's villains are more relevant now than ever, and a full accounting of what in the English canon is overrated and underrated—Harry Potter included. Watch the full conversation with @HenryEOliver and @tylercowen here or wherever you get podcasts: youtube.com/watch?v=8JDH6Y…

If free speech only protects views we like, is it truly free? This isn’t just about one confrontation on the street, it’s about the wider debate over what free speech really means in society today. Watch⤵️

The DPP’s appeal against Mr Coskun’s acquittal has been rightly dismissed. We don’t have a blasphemy law. And we shouldn’t create one by stealth.

@AaronRegunberg University of Chicago economist here. The problem is that the discipline in major schools is basically applied math, with an added critical assumption of rational behavior. I used to argue with my professors that they were selling a tautological product but they didn’t care.

I listened to this interview. Jon Stewart asked a bunch of nuanced, cogent questions that Furman couldn't answer. He just repeated the same simplistic Econ 101 arguments. We've let these blindered economists run the world for decades. Look around to see how it's worked out.
Jason Furman@jasonfurman

The single worst interview I've ever done was with Jon Stewart. I normally try to be calm and level-headed but I basically lost it with him. And worry that I lost viewers/listeners too, doing more to convince them that economists were obnoxious than that we had useful insights.

The UK's minimum wage is now around two-thirds of the median wage. On any objective measure, it's one of the highest minimum wages in the world. It's a significant price-setting policy intervention. So what exactly is the argument here?

@sam_atis So apparently you can “turn off” personalized ads, but not really. If the ad is based on your current chat, I would still consider that personalized.

The ad looks WAY more part of the answer than I was expecting based on how OpenAI was defending this. Having helped a lot of people with tech, there are going to be many people who can’t tell it’s an ad, especially since the ad in this example is directly relevant to the context
OpenAI@OpenAI

We’re starting to roll out a test for ads in ChatGPT today to a subset of free and Go users in the U.S. Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads are labeled as sponsored and visually separate from the response. Our goal is to give everyone access to ChatGPT for free with fewer limits, while protecting the trust they place in it for important and personal tasks. openai.com/index/testing-…

Setting aside that the founder of Courtsdesk has rebutted this in detail and persuasively on Substack, the idea that banning the service doesn’t reduce access is self-evidently ridiculous — the whole point was to increase access, and you just banned it.
Ministry of Justice@MoJGovUK

HMCTS acted to protect sensitive data after CourtsDesk sent information to a third-party AI company. Journalists’ access to court information has not been affected: listings and records remain available.

@jasonfurman I think sometimes the economy is treated by economists as if it's God. It makes sense that something would have to take the place of God in the modern world and in the US especially, it's the economy. To the extent that y'all treat it as God, I think Stewart is right.

Listening through the full Jon Stewart interview, this specific section was pretty shocking to hear. Stewart doesn't know that: 1) Economics both predicts people's behavior in response to taxes, and recommends taxes to deal with externalities. 2) Economics as a discipline doesn't say "We as economists should exclusively facilitate corporations maximizing shareholder value." He acts shocked and skeptical when Thaler says that economics is about maximizing the public's welfare. He disagrees with Thaler and says "The goal of economics in a capitalist system is to make the most amount of money for your shareholders. Since when is economics about improving the human condition?" 3) Economics isn't synonymous with "completely free markets with no taxes." I don't know how you spend 20+ years publicly commenting on politics 5 nights a week without at least bothering to learn this. Shows a pretty shocking lack of curiosity. youtu.be/rZczEzMu_U8?si…

@CharlesD353 Your second paragraph is amusing because a huge amount of The Righteous Mind is making the argument that many people use their emotions to decide what they believe and then use their reasoning to justify that emotional response.

Not very confident in the following, because I've not been motivated to look more closely, but with that caveat out of the way... I think it's mostly bunk and not dissimilar to historical moral panics. I have been pretty unimpressed with Haidt, he seems like someone who's decided what's true and then tried to find arguments to support it rather than approaching things rigorously. Generally I am opposed to banning things without compelling evidence and I do not think it is there for this. I think social media is probably positive for the median person but am not very confident. Like most things it is a mixed bag.
