It’s not bizarre at all, you say ‘rooting’ for City which I totally understand they don’t provoke the same feelings as others, but people aren’t rooting for City, they WANT them to beat Arsenal! That’s the difference. The column looks at why. Thanks for bringing more traffic👍

For someone who seems generally to have his finger on the pulse of fan sentiment, this is a bizarre take from Carragher. Neutrals have been rooting for City over teams they care about for basically the last decade. telegraph.co.uk/football/2026/…

The pundits have set up a can’t lose scenario for themselves when it comes to generating rage-traffic. If we pull away in the title race, we are the worst champions & we are ruining football. If we don’t pull away in the title race, then it’s an avalanche of “bottle” articles 💰

@Carra23 We’re the envy of world football and always have been. No European Cup. No title in over 20 years. Yet everyone is obsessed and can’t keep us out of their mouth? A club with depth, values, tradition, culture, diversity, elegance, and style that people just envy.

@Carra23 It’s strange thing that the north west biased media have an obsession with Arsenal. They loved it when we could be bullied and players lost their careers to bad injuries, now they can’t handle it

Trent Alexander-Arnold plays right-back for Real Madrid. Started home and away against Manchester City. He won the Premier League and Champions League at right-back with Liverpool. He’s used to dealing with pressure. He’s taken a decisive tournament penalty. He’s played in the World Cup before. He has occasional defensive deficiencies but he brings a long-range passing skill that few possess. Are England that blessed at right-back that they don’t need Alexander-Arnold? That he isn’t amongst the best 30 outfield players available to Thomas Tuchel?

It’s not Arsenal the club or the players that many are hoping to see fail. It’s what Arteta has created. Hyper-coached, risk-averse, system football, repeatable patterns where total control is everything and spontaneity and individuality are discouraged. It’s incredibly effective, but for many fans it’s the opposite of why we fell in love with the game. It feels like football engineered, not expressed. And a lot of fans miss the mavericks, of which there are so few in the modern game.

Brilliant piece from @OllieHolt22 👇 This bit keeps coming back to me. "Many are still consumed by a strange kind of naked desperation for Arsenal to fail. That desperation seems to centre on Arteta more than any of his players, as if he has become a lightning rod for the schadenfreude of opposing fans and they cannot bear the idea that he is going to have the last laugh." Help me understand why the dislike (apart from the fact that winning gets seen often as suspicious in the UK, and that fans from other teams would use any stick available, no matter how flawed, to diminish a win from other clubs) But don't give me partisan lines, I would like some kind of sociological/psychological explanation (if possible)
