Ursula solves complex problems. This is why she is the President: "The cheapest energy is the one you don't use." Also: "The cheapest food is the one you don't eat." "The cheapest clothes are the ones you don't wear." "̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶h̶e̶a̶p̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶w̶e̶a̶p̶o̶n̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶d̶o̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶u̶s̶e̶"̶...wait scratch that.

🇪🇺 No Gas, No Oil, No Problem: "The cheapest energy is the one you don't use." Ursula von der Leyen suggests going greener and renovating buildings to reduce energy requirements. She wants to respect consumer choice … so how about buying Russian gas so the industry will survive? How about this consumer choice? So that Europe survives as an industrial wealthy region?

The thing you have to remember about this woman and those like her is that she genuinely doesn’t know that anyone disagrees with her basic worldview. She doesn’t even see it as a worldview. It’s just the obvious truth. Of course she knows abstractly that half the country voted for Trump. But those aren’t people. Those are cartoon characters. They’re either fat slobbering rednecks in klan hoods, or mustache-twirling robber barons manipulating the rednecks for profit. Her mental models of them are less complex than her mental model of a squirrel. Anyone she might actually sit down and talk to is, of course, a person, and therefore agrees with The Obvious Truth. It is inconceivable to her that anyone capable of being a pleasant dinner party guest would not share her basic beliefs and values. She wasn’t trying to do a gotcha or extract a pledge of fealty. She was certain that Sydney Sweeney is a person, and therefore only got mixed up in the whole jeans/genes fiasco by mistake. She was trying to do Sydney a favor by giving her a chance to clarify that she is in fact a human being who agrees with the things all real people agree with.

Bovaer Scandal in Denmark The enzyme inhibitor drug Bovaer has been mandatory for use in Danish cows since October 1st. Now, many cows are collapsing, and some have had to be euthanized. > “We have so many people calling us, distressed about what’s happening in their herds.” > “In several cases, farmers have tried removing the substance from the cows’ feed and found that the animals recovered. When they later reintroduced the substance, the problems returned.” There were always good reasons to be more cautious about Bovaer, as described in the quoted tweet.

Bovaer is a mistake — hubris. Ruminants have evolved over millions of years. They have perfected their four-stomach system that can digest cellulose and turn it into nutritious dairy. It's an advanced process that we don't know how to do. In fact the ruminants can't do it themselves either, they form a symbiotic relationship with bacteria. This process has developed so that it emits methane in all ruminants. This means that there is a strong evolutionary reason for doing it this way. Now the drug Bovaer prevents this natural step of the process from happening, by suppressing the enzymes that carry it out. What happens in the rest of the complex system that is ruminant digestion when part of it is suppressed? We don't know! All we know is from a few metrics that have been measured. Methane output is reduced. Feed intake is also reduced, which already is not comforting. But there can be many other changes we don't understand, and don't know how to measure. Probably some news media will paint it as "anti-science" or "misinformation" to be against bovaer. This needs to be clearly rejected.

Things Elon never talks about: -Palantir -Flock cameras -Predictive policing -Biometric surveillance -Erosion of digital privacy rights -Facial recognition in public spaces Caring about the country means talking about these issues. Silence as surveillance grows = complicity.

At first they said it was only polite to refer to someone by their preferred pronounds. Then, they demanded social media censorship. Now, governments are fining, and may soon jail, people who deny the lie that men can become women. This is as terrifying as anything in "1984."

🇮🇪 Is there a better example of what a poor test of ability the electoral system is? Helen McEntee was objectively one of the worst ministers in the history of the Irish state. As Minister for Justice, her pet project for years was the woeful Hate Speech bill, which became so unpopular the government had to scrap it. She presided over a huge breakdown in law and order in Irish cities and the chaos of the Dublin riots; an explosion of fake asylum seekers entering the country to abuse the system; massive over the top police responses to community protests against refugee centers. Despite it all, she now tops the poll in her constituency – a seat she only got in the first place because her father who previously held it took his life and voters gave her the seat in a bi-election – and has been promoted to deputy leader of her party, meaning there's a decent chance she may one day lead this country. A good portion of these voters likely vote for her because they liked her father, another portion because they think it will be "good for the area" to be represented by a government minister, and then a large chunk of boomers who will just back the status quo no matter what for "stability". What other system would reward someone so unremarkable so generously?
