It’s worth saying that the browser is smart enough to not download assets like images when it (or any of its parents) are display: none; so while the html does exists and increases the file size of the doc, the more impactful issue of media assets is not an issue until the image visible. A quick test, hide an image and load your page. In the Network tab, clear out the loaded assets so you have a clean slate, then unhide your image. Only then does the browser actually download the image.
