Rami Malek says becoming the first Egyptian actor to win the Oscar for best actor is "one of the greatest achievements. "The hope it's imbued in so many people all over the world, especially where my family is from in Egypt... All over the world I think people can relate to what it feels like to be an immigrant... that comes with some weight. To be able to connect to that accomplishment in some way and hopefully inspire anyone fills me with some sense of pride that is greater even than doing the work itself." @KeringGroup #WomenInMotion

@NidaNoren @HamsterCircle @ZohranKMamdani I often see this, even when interacting with people who call themselves Kemalists or Atatürkists. Even the smallest criticism triggers extremely racist reactions, which is why many people call it a cult.

@HamsterCircle @ZohranKMamdani That’s a very surface-level take. Atatürk’s legacy isn’t about “cult worship,” it’s about rebuilding a nation from ashes and setting a foundation for democratic institutions. Learning the full historical picture matters before dismissing it as propaganda.

@NidaNoren @HamsterCircle @ZohranKMamdani That’s why Zohran said what he said. Criticizing Atatürk isn’t allowed in turkey and many Turks want to return to his era, which is questionable, like with Erdoğan today. The Turkish left is very nationalist and don’t like minorities, similar to the Western right-wing.

@NidaNoren @HamsterCircle @ZohranKMamdani For many Kemalists that I have met preserving western secular-life style, matters more than democracy itself. In that sense, Erdoğan and Atatürk are two sides of the same coin. They are different in values, but similar in their pursuit of power and control.

@NidaNoren @HamsterCircle @ZohranKMamdani I recognize Atatürk’s key role in founding modern Turkey after WWI, however he was not democratically elected and led a single-party state. He preached democracy and equality but did not fully practice them, limiting political opposition, Kurdish identity and religious expression
