@mabrukix @GEORGEMORGAN_01 I've always argued that we will probably lose out on making money on marijuana and hemp. We are already making money from alcohol and cigarettes. As for the viability, Lesotho and Rwanda think it is worth a try x.com/samo2beta/stat…

@OliverCheruiyot @MuregaNN @anj_116_ While at it, we should also tap into marijuana trade before our neighbours outfox us. Also get into hemp production for clothes. We make our money like the Norway did with oil and exit when prices crash. Put that money into sovereign wealth and move. twitter.com/samo2beta/stat…

@mabrukix I doubt if there are "Affordable" market apartments that have been built on private land. The tax benefits were rolled back. Starehe Point was inked before and without the levy. Land was the govt's equity. Location ticket all the right boxes...

@MativoMJohn @rodgers_adai The plan says we should be increasing imports, Geothermal and and Hydro. Barring interconnection capacity, imports can be ramped up almost immediately.

But I am wondering what Dr. Eng. Siror is saying. Tanzania, Ethiopia have excess Power. Ethiopia can actually supply our entire needs. Tanzania can give 1000 MW. And we are interconnected. It doesn't make sense. This should also be a lesson to Kenyans. There is no planning. We have 2700 MW Firm excluding Imports plus 600MW Renewables ( Wind LTWP 300 MW Kipeto 50 MW plus about 300 MW Solar). We made a mistake in investing too much in Renewables. When you talk of available Power, Renewables are not counted because they are too intermittent. 300MW of Thermal ( likely Gas Turbine will be very expensive Power. In 1997, during President Moi's time, there was a Loan embargo and Kenya could not finance Power Generation. This was supposed to be a temporary measure and was the First IPP. A Barge with a 30MW Gas Turbine moored in Kipevu in an arrangement with Westmont. It is still there though not running. Actually IPPs were supposed to stop once Loans ended. Instead they were enhanced. Why are we even contemplating going there again?

@kiihelahq @ojwangthegreat Robert Moses was bureaucrat not an elected official. Shows how their democracy/political system respected professionals. Here a @KenyaGovernors is elected and the first thing they do is hire new staff; from morgue attendants to messengers.

I’m of the opinion that Nairobi cannot be fixed in 10 years. For the capital to truly be fixed, it will require one competent person to remain in power for 20 years. All this 5-year cycle and then handing over to another person will not fix Nairobi. That’s my belief.

@_omondioloo @ArapTilingi Yes, they may have "problems" but not at a physiological level as someone who's starving. The data shared is from GoK & @KNBStats,not "negativity". I agree that everyone deserves leisure but not when one's starving. Imagine going to the beach and then go home to sleep hungry.

@samo2beta @ArapTilingi This is the kind of negativity that I'm talking about. Some of these tourists you see enjoying our country have 'bigger' problems than you can imagine. It's true most Kenyans are not doing well economically, should that stop us from going to the beach to have a good time?

@_omondioloo @ArapTilingi No. 2 in 5 people are poor. In 2023, 1 in 3 people could not afford enough food to perform daily activities. Let's not allow proximity to the wealthy to blind us from the realities of our fellow citizens. We cannot "enjoy" our country when we are barely surviving

@ArapTilingi Well, that's because they've learned to see positivity even when things are alright unlike us wenye tunadwell on negativity. We focus on weaknesses and fail to notice the strengths. That's a big difference between us and them.

@omanyeric @ojwangthegreat What kind of a reset? I am not counting on it. The level of indebtedness that this regime has got us under the guise of fiscal consolidation means that bondholders will never allow such a shock. A viable mini refresh is by sending Ruto home x.com/samo2beta/stat…
Samo K@samo2beta

@kinjeketile This regime used our fiscal debt as a pretext to ring fence key revenue streams (fuel levy, sports levy, SHA levy) and taxes, tying them to finance contracts. Now, State can't even waive fuel levy or the entire VAT, w/out risking distress. They're pushing the risk to firms

@samo2beta @ojwangthegreat I'm afraid the only thing that can save us is a total reset. Unfortunately, most times, such a thing requires a big shock to the system. A cataclysmic event that will awaken our civic duty to ourselves and force us to learn to choose better leaders.

Nairobi does not need a Governor. It needs a capitalist Politburo: a long-horizon executive bureau made up of builders, financiers, urban planners, technocrats, and the Deputy President at the center of coordination. Then appoint a Mayor focused purely on execution.

@omanyeric @ojwangthegreat And is it their fault when the hired representatives underperform? NO. Using a job analogy, an underperforming worker is fired but in the case of MPs, it's not possible. We should resist the urge to blame voters, who are essentially an interview panel. x.com/samo2beta/stat…
Samo K@samo2beta

On public participation, I am inclined to absolve Kenyans. I have attended two forums and learnt a few things about them. In 95% of the cases, govt agency organizes as means of rubber stamping a flawed process. You must of be aware of the many legislations which have been ../

@omanyeric @ojwangthegreat An average voter is no different in most (if not all) elective democracies. The real Q is how the 6 get away with such mediocrity... It's coz it's virtually impossible to get rid of them. To get a better recall law requires the president to cooperate x.com/samo2beta/stat…
Samo K@samo2beta

The other aspect is that we need to make it easier to get rid of wayward representatives through recall. Current recall law requires signatures of 30% of registered voters. It should be change for recall to be just a reverse of nomination with the same number of signatures

@omanyeric @ojwangthegreat It is not the people per-se rather a bad political culture that's difficult to get rid of. New York, Paris and London are great cities yet they have elected representatives and mayors. The same verve that got rid of Rigathi should be deployed in counties x.com/samo2beta/stat…
Samo K@samo2beta

@ojwangthegreat Your belief isn't "justified". Edward Glaeser writes in his book how New York was fixed by different mayors building on previous measures. Mentions William L. Strong (1895-1897), Ed Koch 1978-1989), Rudolph W. Giuliani 1994-2001 and (Michael R. Bloomberg 2002-2013).

@ojwangthegreat Who selects, though? The president 🤣. It's easier if Nairobians stop being dumbusses and just elect competent people for MCA and governor. The problem here is the people.

@Wambuguu_ @mabrukix The economy hasn't been growing fast enough and capital is being allocated efficiently, obviating the need for high rise structures. Will the state do better than individuals in allocating the 1.5% AHL? I have my doubts

One thing I've noticed as we build out this pipeline of 400 markets is the sheer stagnation in all our towns. These markets + AHP are the only recent and large scale developments going on. Just take a look at the buidings around this market.

An interesting discussion. Methinks the in duplum rule should be made to apply in its pure form, not only to Bank & microfinance loans, but also to friendly loans, and equally to court decrees. Otherwise, lending/damages can turn into Shylock relationships, which prick the conscience of the jurist. #TimeIsRIPE

@dexxe It's mostly common in unis where salaries delay and/or rely on adjunct faculty members. Some lecturers withhold scripts/marks for entire classes until they're paid. Some are "genuine" isolated cases but points to poor management and extreme interpretation of academic freedom
