“For the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, happiness has decreased in all age groups, but especially for the young, so much so that the young are now, in 2021-23, the least happy age group,” the report found. In 2010 the young were happier than those in midlife.”
David Coletto 🇨🇦@DavidColetto

The political implications of this are becoming increasingly clear: Young people are becoming less happy than older generations as they suffer “the equivalent of a midlife crisis”, global research has revealed as America’s top doctor warned that “young people are really struggling”. amp.theguardian.com/society/2024/m…

How do you do, fellow kids? In honor of back-to-school, this week’s Backbench is a Very Special Episode focusing on Gen Z political engagement featuring @samreusch as well as the voices of five youth from across the country ✨
The Backbench Pod@backbenchcast

Gen Z doesn't vote and that makes them apathetic. They’re so buried in their phones they don’t even know what's going on around them. Right? Not really… We unpack the complexities of polarization, existential dread, and yes, those damn phones. buff.ly/3sGEW8V

The news cycle is short. Sometimes it’s hard to remember how far we’ve come, especially when the status quo of healthcare remains dire. 11 months ago many folks thought changes in physician mobility were a pipe dream. No political parties or leaders were talking about pan-Canadian Licensure. Now we have an Atlantic physician registry and regulatory changes in multiple provinces. 9 months ago there was a strong rejection of any Provincial or Territorial strings to healthcare funding. Now we have data sharing, credentials recognition and shared priority strings. 7 months ago, we didn’t have the largest investment in healthcare since 2004. Now we have 196B dollars. And 3 month ago, we didn’t have any bills tabled to move forward a national pharmacare program. We now have two! Confidence in healthcare will get better as change compounds over time. The building blocks are there. Zoom out and you’ll realize the odds of better are higher than the news cycle makes you believe.

Canada has a polarization problem. What are we going to do about it? Since early this year, I've been working on a deep dive for the Public Policy Forum on the state of our fractious politics. The results are out today: ppforum.ca/publications/p…

New data from @jciconsult shows profit margins in 🇨🇦 food retail are up about 1/3 from pre-pandemic norms. Specialty food stores have led the way, supermarkets not far behind. His full report: jacobsonconsulting.com/jci_site/index…. Reinforces Commons committee's concerns about excess profit.
