My new runj OCI runtime for FreeBSD jails got a lot more attention than I had expected today! I wrote up a new post on my blog about runj, what OCI runtimes do, and what I'm looking to do with the project: samuel.karp.dev/blog/2021/03/r…

Looks like Justin let the cat out of the bag a little early, but I've been playing around to learn FreeBSD and wrote a new OCI runtime for jails. github.com/samuelkarp/runj

containerd 1.7.1 has been released! This first patch release for 1.7 includes quite a few fixes worth looking at, especially if you are trying out some experimental features. github.com/containerd/con…

@samuelkarp @ranman @manugupt1 @OmarQunsul @shrmaky not sure id call it optional, but yeah very interesting/good scaling characteristics. the ability to collocate storage with compute and ~infinitely~ scalable read throughput being two of them. also less used but the fact that it exposes eventing as a first class primitive.

This is completely false. I was there. I have him muted but 50+ people have sent me this nonsense and asked for my comment... so I've conceded. The record needs to be corrected. He's completely incorrect and I have receipts. 🧵

The only reason AWS teams chose to host non-trivial applications on Lambda was because Amazon leadership forced them to. The argument was: “How can we sell something we’re not using ourselves?” and “If we force ourselves to use it, it will become better.”

@dastbe @ranman @manugupt1 @OmarQunsul @shrmaky JournalDB had pretty different operational and scaling characteristics than traditional relational DBs though, since you had an optional relational frontend on top of something that fundamentally was non-relational in the backend. Plus, like...shard the data from the beginning.

@ranman @manugupt1 @OmarQunsul @shrmaky you also have a chunk of services building on journaldb, which is an internal option for relational storage. makes sense when you’re building a service with complex resource interactions.

@OmarQunsul @ranman @shrmaky I don't remember anything specifically that you must choose DynamoDB, but there was a push to avoid relational databases generally (in favor of pretty much anything else) and Oracle databases specifically.

It was great to finally meet them in person! These two implemented fuzzing across the @containerd project and worked together with the maintainers on a few findings. Looking forward to more great security improvements due to their work across the CNCF.

Go support our @containerd maintainers, @samuelkarp & Maksym Pavlenko in the Forum at 17:25pm, sharing a @containerd project update. (The “Forum” is at the keynote end of RAI; follow signs for the “Forum”; where KCD was located) Then go buy a cool @containerd hat from the store!
