My grandfather always told me one thing: “Pay attention to how people treat you before money is involved.” I never understood what he meant. Until after he passed away. Suddenly relatives I hadn’t heard from in years started calling me. Asking how I was doing. Telling me we should “stay close as family.” I thought maybe grief had brought everyone together. I was wrong. A week later the will was read. My grandfather had left me his house because I was the one who spent weekends helping him, taking him to appointments, fixing things around the place, and just sitting with him when everyone else was “too busy.” The room went silent. Then came the reactions. “This can’t be right.” “He manipulated him.” “He’s too young for this.” “Family assets should be shared.” Funny. Because nobody wanted to share the responsibility of caring for him when he was alive. But now suddenly everyone wanted to share what he left behind. One relative even asked me to “do the right thing” and sign it over. I refused. And apparently that’s when I became selfish. Interesting how people call it greed when you keep what was given to you... but call it fairness when they want a piece of it.
