The recently surfaced email dated September 19, 2014, attributed to Jeffrey Epstein, has raised several serious and legitimate questions. In this correspondence, Epstein uses the term “girls?” while listing the names of global leaders, business figures, institutional heads, and officials from various countries. Among these names appears “Hardeep Puri” from India — who, at that time, was a member of the BJP and is today the Honourable Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas of India. This was the very period when the BJP was prominently promoting its message of women’s empowerment, women’s dignity, and the Beti Bachao campaign. The appearance of a BJP member’s name in an email from a convicted sex offender — particularly in a context where the word “girls?” is used — understandably creates a need for clarity. The question is not about other individuals mentioned in the email. The central question is: Why does the name of an Indian public representative appear in an email where Epstein seems to be referring to the availability of “girls”? When the BJP speaks emphatically about women’s safety and dignity, it is reasonable for citizens to expect the party to clarify how and why the name of one of its members appears in such correspondence. A further important question arises: Will the BJP offer a clear explanation, or must the public be left wondering about the nature of associations that cause such names to appear in documents connected to global controversies of this kind? If the BJP sincerely intends to lead the national discourse on women’s rights, transparency on this matter would only strengthen public trust. In light of this email becoming public, the women of India would like to know from the Honourable Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. Hardeep Puri, what the factual position regarding this correspondence is. A clear explanation would help prevent confusion or speculation. We also respectfully appeal to the Prime Minister of India to share whatever information is appropriate and available, so that the women of this country may feel assured that our national leadership holds women in the highest regard and does not view them in any inappropriate or objectifying manner. In the same spirit of transparency, we humbly request the women leaders of the BJP — including Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman and all respected women Members of Parliament — to seek clarity on this issue as well. Such openness would help reassure the women of India that the names of national leaders are not being associated, even inadvertently, with individuals involved in global sex-related controversies. This is not an act of accusation. It is a sincere appeal for truth — so that public trust, women’s dignity, and the confidence of India’s women may be upheld. @Jairam_Ramesh @Pawankhera
