Abeer Kapoor and Ujan Dutta's graphic novel brings the lens of fiction to an underexplored part of the freedom movement: the first decade and a half of the 20th century.

I write for The Wire on the India’s response to US-Israel-Iran war.
Silence Is Not Strategy: How India Blinked on Iran
* India’s “silence” on the US–Israel war on Iran is being sold as responsible statecraft, but it is actually deference, not prudence. It is strategic abdication dressed in diplomatic language.
* Silence can be principled restraint, but only when communicated with clarity. What India practised was opaque deference to Washington and Tel Aviv.
* India didn’t even issue a condolence on Iran’s Supreme Leader’s death. Even minor nations do this. This wasn’t calculation, it was a reflexive tilt.
* Iran isn’t just a trade partner. It’s the anchor of INSTC and Chabahar, India’s own strategic counter to China Pakistan Economic Corridor. Two decades of investment by successive governments of India is now quietly abandoned.
* India currently chairs BRICS , a coalition built to challenge American financial hegemony. Iran is a BRICS member. You cannot lead a multipolar bloc while behaving like a unipolar client state.
* Modi govt appears to have trusted Washington’s assessment that Iran would collapse fast. That reading was wrong on every count. India is now quietly backtracking at greater cost, with diminished credibility.
* Iran’s signal letting Indian gas tankers through Hormuz while invoking civilisational ties was pointed: nations outlast governments. India’s own civilisational depth was never deployed by the Modi government.
* Real prudence would have meant protecting Chabahar, maintaining equidistance, and calling for a ceasefire. What India practised was silence born of deference and dereliction of its own strategic investments.
* Ironically, the Modi government, which governs in the name of Indian civilisation and culture, has shown strikingly little faith in them. The institutional depth, the civilisational memory, the diplomatic continuity that India actually possesses and could have deployed, have all been ignored.
* It’s a government led by an ideology that perpetually looks outward for new inspirations, and inward only for electoral messaging. At varying times, it’s enamoured by the Italian fascists, American hegemony, Israeli impunity and at times even Chinese tenacity, but never draws on India’s own philosophical strength and public wisdom. Its grand political design is to rewire India’s thought process to fit its borrowed ideological framework.
