A simple model for supporting struggling readers in the classroom.
1. Start with a universal fluency screener like DIBELS or Acadience. Identify any students reading below the 30th percentile.
2. Test the students below the 30th percentile, further. Check to see if they can identify the most common graphemes and their associated sounds. Check to see if they can add common suffixes to words and spell them correctly. Check to see if they can segment basic words.
3. If they do well on all of these sub-tests, do repeated reading drills with them. If they know the common letter sound correspondances, but struggle with suffixes, teach them morphology. If they don’t know their letter sound correspondences, but can segment words, teach them phonics. In my experience most struggling readers lack phonics knowledge and teaching phonics will make the biggest impact. If they can’t segment words and lack phonics knowledge teach them phonics, blending, and segmenting.
4. In 6 weeks retest them. If they are above the 30th percentile, great. Focus your efforts on the other students who need your help more. If they are still below the 30th, repeat steps 2 and 3.
