A study published in The Lancet Global Health has warned that rising temperatures due to climate change could significantly increase levels of physical inactivity, with India expected to be among the hardest hit by 2050. The research finds that exposure to higher temperatures is linked to reduced physical activity, with each month above 27.8°C associated with a measurable rise in inactivity levels. The impact is projected to be more pronounced in low- and middle-income countries, including India, where the study estimates a rise in inactivity along with associated health and economic costs. Physical inactivity is already a major public health concern, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and mental health disorders. The study suggests that climate-driven behavioural shifts could further exacerbate these risks, contributing to premature deaths and productivity losses globally.
