"You can't fail my class. I want you to focus on finding learning, not avoiding failure." This is a day-one pledge. No matter what, I won't fail kids. I set the bar high. Focusing on passing is low-bar, gate-keeping thinking. Focusing on learning is only-up, growth thinking.

So, there’s this sophomore (let’s call him Will) in my Credit Recovery class, a joyful kid with more F’s than passing grades on his transcript. Will spends all period on his tablet, but doesn’t complete any course work. Today I got a glimpse of what he’s been doing. 🧵⬇️

@SusanDebraBlum @alfiekohn From the high school perspective, I’ve struggled more to convince colleagues, students, and parents about the toxicity of our grading policies and the benefits of #ungrading. It’s been my experience that administration is happy when the clients are happy.

Another wave of grade inflation panic is coming. @alfiekohn convinced me a decade ago. Administrators are under many pressures, I understand, & want to prove that faculty have "high standards" by showing grade distributions. Does anyone have experience convincing administrators?
