@VisiData Shift+F is a superfeature. If you know nothing else, you can still run vd and get a lot done. In one keystroke, you get distinct items in a col, sorted by their counts, with their percentage of total, and a histogram. One more keypress (Enter) to filter down to a single element.

@emrcodes Put in your .visidatarc: Sheet.addCommand('', 'paste-cell-append', 'cursorCol.setValue(cursorRow, f"{cursorDisplay}{memory.clipval}")', 'append clipboard value to cell contents')

Does anyone know how to make custom function in #VisiData that allows you to append the contents of your yank to the current cell? I have tried google + chatGPT and despite reading examples and documentation and many prompts I cannot seem to make a custom function that works

I'm in need of some grocery money, so I'm opening one slot for scenes and backgrounds! Characters can of course be incorporated, please send me a DM to talk over specifics :)

@mmngreco There is vdsql which uses Ibis which can use DuckDB as a backend. It needs to be updated for a later version of Ibis but otherwise should work, and might be just what you want (and then some).

@KevinWoblick Often times people overcomplicate things because they assume it can't be that easy. That's what "it's simple, just do X" means: It's easier than you (probably) think, don't overcomplicate it.

This whole thread is spot on. Also it seems obvious that prolific use of AI at scale is going to use even more energy than Bitcoin, and isn't global warming still a thing? How about we get a carbon tax before someone puts AI on a cryptocurrency (this IS how you get skynet)
Dan Luu@danluu

Why should the AI alignment problem be prioritized when the human alignment problem is still open, with little recent progress? We already have a paperclip maximization machine. We call it capitalism. It causes people to maximize individual wealth at the expense of all else.

@timothylord How about 'human-driven'? This covers scale, power, and also agency.

@saulfp Saul, that's actually a great term. One aspect of this always-bugging-me pseudo-category (an idiosyncratic one, I know) is that it needs no additional non-user power in ordinary use. Also, wear has to be minimal per instance of use. So bicycle or book, Yes; car or candle, No.

@mmbollmann @mjpost +list on the column you want to reduce, then Shift+F on the column to group. Then =func(col_list) to get the reduction. easy peasy :)

I need a unix command that reads tabbed input and applies an arbitrary function to a value column, grouped by keys in another column—essentially `reduce`. Not hard to write, but this has to exist already?

@elly_bangs Have you ever tried tweetdeck.twitter.com? It's simple keyword chronological instead of algorithm-selected. I never see the main twitter feed anymore and my life is better for it.

@timothylord Ah, that makes total sense! Bicycle is a perfect example. I'm wondering if there is any computational technology besides the abacus and the slide rule that would be human-scale like this?

@timothylord When thinking about marketing, it's been helpful for me to consider the 100m people born every year who haven't seen any of those previous advertisements. If you're in it for the long haul you have to keep the pipeline full!

A funny thing to me: Lots of advertisements for the places that typical customers already know make hamburgers, or coffee, or cars ... are reminders (necessary or not) that those places make hamburgers, or coffee, or cars. #adv101

@xn Also, lots of laid-off SWEs flush with cash from the latest boom, and cynical about modern software businesses.
