The part that doesn’t get talked about enough in late-stage is liquidation prefs. A $100M check into a $200M ARR company at a $5B vs $10B post changes the upside multiple, but doesn’t really change principal protection if total prefs < eventual exit value. If that company ends up selling for $2B, your downside isn’t −60% like it would be buying common in the public markets, it’s basically 0.5x - 1× (including opportunity cost). That payoff shape starts to look a lot like covered calls: you give up some convexity for a higher probability of capital recovery. If you avg. 1× your “misses” and get real (5x+) write-ups on 2 out of 10, the portfolio math works well. This is very different from early-stage power-law investing, even though they get lumped together under “VC” - tldr is you can still good drives returns, even if every one is at premiums to public market multiples.

We have a big problem. The venture model doesn’t work with the current public market revenue multiples. Datadog ⬇️ 21% Figma ⬇️ 20% Wix ⬇️ 38% Braze is 2.5x ARR Atlassian is 4.8x ARR Klaviyo is 4.5x ARR Venture doesn’t work unless this changes. Agree @infoarbitrage @bgurley @jasonlk @rodriscoll?
