My siblings are republican. They make negative comments once in a while about our governor (newsom) and how California is a “socialist state”. I bite my tongue. It’s hard. I don’t think they are in love with trump but they aren’t as informed as people who watch independent journalism. We just don’t talk about him and his policies. I want us to be together at Christmas. I want to visit my brother in New Mexico as his health isn’t the best. You sound like a really level headed woman with excellent communication skills. You have to be honest with yourself about how much discomfort you feel about your interactions with your mom. She’s made it crystal clear she isn’t interested in changing so do you want to beat your head on the wall to maintain a relationship just because you’re family?

Having a falling out with family members over moral issues disguised as politics is an epidemic in the US right now. It's very similar to the divisions seen in families during the Civil War. There is one common theme, and it's discussed in this video: MAGA Cult Members (and this is a central theme to Cults) care more about what those in the Cult (what they often refer to as their community) than even their closest friend or relative. Even their own children. This can be devastating to the non-MAGAs effected, but surprisingly reassuring to those in MAGA, which only deepens the divisions and the pain. Tribalism is a powerful influencer on behavior.
