@cremieuxrecueil Okay, so California is messed up, but it is stupid rich and has many people who know what they are doing. If they do manage to get high speed rail and affordable universal healthcare, will you be willing to update?

@huwaliyasuntob double standards claims are raised by bad actors to justify or at least ignore Israeli imperialism. Others, I think more reasonably, are just using it to call out many leftists who claim to not have an obvious anti-US and anti-semitic agenda. Even the latter can be shortsighted.

I don't know if the Arabization of the Middle East should be called "settler colonialism," but I do think people should be open in general to the idea that it isn't a phenomenon unique to a particular time period and set of actors
Sami Gold@souljagoyteller

Academic historians won’t call the Arabization of the Middle East “settler colonialism” for the same reason they won’t label the destruction of Carthage a “genocide”: it’s anachronistic, and fundamentally against the historical method. What you want is propaganda

@eurofounder You would have to be among the 5% of the American population who is uninsured for it to cost even a fraction of that much. You are probably lying or even more likely a robot.

My son got stabbed on a German subway yesterday Apparently an Afghan man got angry at him for not speaking Arabic He is in the hospital right now, and I have to say the experience has been absolutely wonderful He was seen by a doctor within 40 minutes of arriving The doctors were professional and helped my son right away No one asked for a credit card or insurance details His life was saved completely free of charge In America this would have cost $250,000 and he would be in debt for the rest of his life "Aren't you worried he got stabbed at all?" my wife was crying "Baby, crime exists everywhere but free healthcare does not" I told her My son is recovering well and should be back at his feet within couple months It feels so fantastic to be protected by the EU

@Halalcoholism Seems to me that popular conceptions of beauty in China and Japan are phenomenally obsessed with facial beauty and its standardization, subordinating everything else to that first priority. Westerners recognized that Lucy Liu is just hot, and people cannot get over that.

Far be it from me to say Lucy Liu is unattractive, but there’s some context to her appeal. The lack of high profile Asian-American actresses generally, and her emergence in a “sexy bad bitch” role on Ally McBeal (huge in the 90s), which did a lot to shape how we perceive her.
Michelle@D162Michele

Is it just me, or are Chinese and Western beauty standards completely different? To many Chinese people, Lucy Liu would not be considered hot or beautiful.🤷‍♀️

My friend. You very literally just proved the point. If you aren’t able to have a conversation about something outside of your interests, and if you’re not willing to entertain her interests and opinions as talking points instead of debate topics, you’re a bad date. You’re telling her right out the gate that you’re no fun.

This is a bad take. Astrology ought to be a non starter, unless you are being facetious about it. Taking astrology seriously suggests that you are epistemically broken. Possibly scientifically illiterate.

They told their children that Columbus discovered America. They told their children that the frontier was empty. They told their children that slavery ended and then everyone worked together to build a great nation. They told their children that they entered the World Wars reluctantly, purely to defend freedom, and asked for nothing in return. They told their children that the Cold War was a noble struggle of freedom against tyranny and that every intervention in every poor country was part of that struggle. They told their children that their country has sometimes made mistakes but always, in its heart, on the right side. Generation after generation after generation. And then they are confused, genuinely confused, when the people who were on the receiving end of that history have a different account of it. Not a different interpretation. A different account. Because they were there. The children who were told the beautiful story and the people who lived through the actual events are describing different realities. And the children who were told the beautiful story have been trained to believe that their version, the one taught in their schools, the one in their films, the one that makes them feel clean, is the neutral one.

@OopsGuess You know they didn't hang slaveowners after the Civil War? I guess that means the Union Army profited from slavery and was complicit in it.

It says a lot that this video about Unit 731 was made by an American. Because Unit 731 was not only a Japanese crime. It was also an American moral failure after the war. The Nazis were not history’s only monsters. Fascist Imperial Japan’s Unit 731 was a state-run death factory: live human dissections without anesthesia, frostbite experiments, plague bombs dropped on Chinese villages, poisoned food and water, rape used as disease research, and biological weapon tests on entire towns. And then came the second crime: the United States gave Shirō Ishii immunity in exchange for his research. So please stop telling me America “helped China.” It profited from Chinese corpses and protected men who should have died in prison.
𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘦@OopsGuess

Japan’s invasion of China was not the crime of a few isolated militarists floating above society. It required mass mobilization, public consent, media propaganda, industrial cooperation, emperor worship, and a society willing to move with the machinery of empire. So no, this is not a history that can be washed clean by pretending that “ordinary people were all innocent.” In fact, Japanese fascism committed the most serious atrocities in human history in Asia. It was not just war. It was invasion, occupation, massacre, colonization, rape, bacteriological warfare, and brutal experiments on living human beings. Its crimes were so grotesque that even the language of “war crimes” feels too clean for them. And now Japanese neo-fascists still dare to call that invasion “Asian liberation” and dismiss documented atrocities as propaganda. Japan should be grateful that China’s civilizational restraint was far greater than that of many so-called “civilized” states. If Israel can justify massacring Gazans by invoking the fact that Hamas was elected in Gaza, then China would have had far greater grounds to pursue collective historical vengeance against Japan for the social complicity behind its war crimes. And yet, these descendants of fascists now believe that the Chinese government's restraint is condoning their wanton rewriting of history. They forget that memory is the foundation upon which the Chinese nation has continued to this day. The regime may forgive your crimes, but the Chinese people will never.

They are told, from birth, that they live in the freest country on earth. What they are not told is what the freedom costs. Not in taxes. In blood. The specific blood of specific people in specific countries whose governments were overthrown, whose resources were extracted, whose militaries were funded to suppress their own populations, whose debts were structured to ensure permanent dependency, so that the American standard of living could be what it is. Freedom has a supply chain. It runs through the Global South. It runs through the IMF's structural adjustment programs. Through the School of the Americas' training manuals. Through the weapons contracts and the base agreements and the client states and the assassinations of leaders who asked inconvenient questions about who owns the copper, the oil, the land. None of this appears on the label. The label says freedom. The country of origin is not listed.

@MattZeitlin Dogs should be allowed on restaurant patios, botegas, possibly urban grocery stores, no-food bars, and on the subway for a ticket fare. Put those in place, then jail people who don't pick up poop and let their dogs offleash outside a dog park. Jail them. Solitary.
