I own an electrical contracting firm in TX. The most important thing is to find a company who is willing to hire without experience and hopefully can work under a journeyman who is skilled and can train. Many can’t. In my opinion, too many people get caught up in the idea that school is required. The important thing is to get on projects where the work is being done and learn the skills by practice.
Learning the code and calculations can happen (and makes a lot more sense) as you spend a couple years doing the work. We’ve had guys come into an interview after formal trade school thinking they’d be journeyman level, but the reality is they still lack the invaluable experience that only a ton of time on the job can provide. Just some thought from someone who has grown up in the trenches.
