Politics. Wisconsin. Music. Not always in that order. Associated Press Statehouse correspondent based in Madison.

The deal between Governor Evers and Republican legislators is a compromise that’s far from perfect, and it’s a reminder of how much better off Wisconsin would be with Democratic majorities in the state legislature. I support increasing funding for public schools and special education, and providing property tax relief for homeowners. I also support doing more. The real problem is that the Trump-Tiffany economy has placed such an enormous burden on Wisconsin families, and they need more support. We still have a lot of work to do to lower the cost of living by expanding access to affordable healthcare, childcare and housing. That’s why I am running for Governor, and when we win, we will deliver the help Wisconsinites need.

Governor Evers is acting like the arsonist who wants praise for spraying a drop of water on the fire he started. This backroom “relief deal” does nothing to repeal Governor Evers’ 400-year property tax increase. It does nothing to stop Madison’s addiction to taxing and spending. And after Governor Evers’ PSC approved billions in utility rate hikes, a one-time $300 check barely scratches the surface. When I am governor, the gimmicks stop and lasting relief begins. The 400-year property tax increase will be repealed. Madison’s addiction to overtaxing families will be dismantled. Surplus funds will be returned to the taxpayers where they belong, and Wisconsin workers will keep more of what they earn from the very beginning. Madison has taken far too much from you for far too long, and that ends with me. You deserve more than a drop.

Today’s deal offers immediate help on school funding and tax relief, and is a strong reminder that our next governor must have the expertise and track record to grow our economy for all Wisconsinites over the long haul. This is the only way we can sustain real investments in jobs, health care, school and tax relief for many more budgets to come. I’m the only candidate who has grown Wisconsin’s economy, from fighting to keep 1,600 farmers on their land as a leader at Organic Valley, to helping 9,500 Wisconsinites start a small business, to creating 45,000 good paying jobs across the state. No other candidate in race has the experience growing Wisconsin’s economy needed to get this done, and as we face Trumps tariff, healthcare cuts, and gas hikes, growing our economy is the most important skill and qualification our state’s next executive must possess.

@GovEvers' bargain with the GOP is bad for Wisconsin, and I will be voting no. This backroom deal is a payday loan taken out at the expense of our children, our infrastructure, our economy, and our future.
