I am excited to share our latest research on the arachnoid barrier, a crucial yet poorly understood structure that partitions the CNS and the dura, out today @Nature. We discovered that gaps in this barrier allow communication between the CNS and the dura. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Hey #RareDisease people, this is very serious: Taysha drops a program after FDA asks them for a randomized placebo-controlled *for a gene therapy in a neurodegenerative rare disease* Taysha argues that such trial is not feasible. I would even argue that it might not be ethical.
Jared Whitlock@Jared_Whitlock

The company Taysha stopped development on a therapy after saying FDA demands are unworkable. It comes amid growing debate over the regulations for treatments aimed at ultra-rare conditions. endpts.com/taysha-stops-d…

@CNSdrughunter @PearlF completely agree, there was a lot of debate about the problems of FDA rigidity in requirements for rare disease trials in kids at the Rasopathies symposium this summer. Options for delayed start, natural history external controls (as has been tried for NF1) are really needed

@PearlF The design is what I find unethical. A delayed start design, I can see. A placebo-controlled trial for a gene therapy (long trial) in a degenerative disease or a childhood disease means the placebo patients will miss their perhaps only chance to get better. They are not lab mice.

Much to learn here. Also, i think morr generally all of science would benefit from researchers "understanding who they are and how that informs the research questions asked, the research relationships formed, the location of the research and the way research is conducted."

Indigenous knowledge is increasingly valued, but to fully respect it we need to decolonise science – here's how. Shameless promotion of recent research and resultant Conversation piece. ⁦@taramcallister4theconversation.com/indigenous-kno…

Thrilled to share our work showing that early alterations in the MCH-system link aberrant neuronal activity and sleep disturbances in AD @NatureNeuro. I co-led this project with @DeStrooperLab and @joris_dewit_lab @CBD_VIB 🧠

An MCH-mediated homeostatic mechanism counteracts the increased excitatory drive to CA1 neurons and altered #sleep in Alzheimer's disease model mice, but this mechanism fails in older mice New from @SaraCalafate @joris_dewit_lab @DeStrooperLab and colleagues

Now I'm curious: confocal gurus, what's your favorite software package for *JUST* viewing zstacks in 3D? As in being able to finely position the viewing angle & having the image rendered accordingly like those below (see alt text for image info) #Microscopy

@BohacekLab It's so helpful that you actually write to decline people. Maybe it's draining for you but it's really helpful for aplicants to be able to move on rather than be left hanging cos someone can't be bothered with decline emails

I just spend an hour politely declining a load of applications to my lab. Often very thoughtful emails with research proposals, strong CVs, lots of very smart people. Saying no to all these applicants is emotionally draining. I feel really bad. How do others deal with this?
