@emzanotti Our problem was always racoons. They were wily enough to wait until the chicks had grown. They were able to pry the chicken wire open. We had to double the wire and put a double wire roof on to keep them out.

Another fox attack yesterday, three more chickens gone. Death is part of the deal in farming, I know, but dealing with a predator that kills for fun still sucks. Never really gets easy.

@jackshafer @the_60s_at_60 Except for a remotely written Nats story by a new staffer, entire WaPo Sports section today is wire copy — and section has been devoid of sports columnists since Barry Svrluga signed off at the end of the Winter Olympics.

Wire service stories or reprints from other newspapers used to be Washington Post rarities. I count at least 17 in the Sunday Post.

@jackshafer six out of ten stories inside the A section are wire. The original explanation for the purge was that sports and arts were gutted to focus resources on the national report. Now?

Dodgers season ticket holders Chad Smith and Jocelyn Rodriguez just bought two of the Ohtani collective cups at Dodger Stadium that can be refilled for $151.43. They only filled one up with Coke Zero. He says it’s the most money he has ever paid for soda. 😀

@cturnbull1968 Have to say, we stopped going to restaurants during the pandemic and rarely go out anymore. When we do, we're shocked at the price tag - $15-$25 for call drinks, entrees are minimum $32 and up. Even breakfast is $50 for two of us. Even fast casual seem expensive.

Hmm. This was dispiriting. I had a haircut from a young woman, and after she established that I write for a newspaper, she gushed: "That's so interesting! I've never actually read a newspaper."

Peak bloom and near-perfect weather 🌸 CWG’s Kevin Ambrose (@dcstormchaser) captured the cherry blossoms Thursday under what he says were some of the best conditions he’s seen in 23 years. "In my 23 years of photographing cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin, it featured the best weather that I can remember for peak bloom," Ambrose said. "The temperature was in the 70s with a pleasant breeze that was followed by a nice sunset. The crowd was heavy but I've seen much worse in past years, especially on weekend days." Take a look at some of Kevin’s standout shots from around the Tidal Basin.

The @CityofLowellMA will always hold a special place in my heart. The cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, Lowell was built on innovation. It’s a city defined by a strong, loyal community and a culture of hard work – one that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who grows up there. As Lowell celebrates its bicentennial, I’m proud to support and give back to a city that played such an important role in my journey.

After more than 40 million NCAA tournament brackets were filled out across both the men’s and women’s games, there is just one perfect bracket remaining, and it was created by an 8th grader in Pennsylvania.

NEW from @pewresearch: Around 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the US military conflict with Iran and say the US made the wrong decision in using military force. A plurality (45%) also say the intervention is not going well. pewresearch.org/politics/2026/…

Opening Day is so special. Hope and faith and optimism in most ballparks. The anticipation of an unexpected magical run for individuals and teams. Baseball always seems to come around when it’s needed most. We need baseball and we love the game. Happy Opening Day!!! It’s magical.

Americans 65 and older are the only age group who mostly turn to their preferred news organization for information about breaking news events. Younger age groups are more likely to turn to a mix of sources, including search engines and social media. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20…
