Did you hear 4 loud booms near Victoria, BC yesterday? A number of the @SchoolShake @raspishake seismographs recorded them. These are not earthquakes, but likely related to Naval activities near Metchosin.

125 years of recording #earthquakes in #Victoria, Canada! On September 3, 1898, a Milne seismograph began operation in the basement of the old Customs House building on the Victoria waterfront. It was one of the first seismographs in Canada: science.gc.ca/eic/site/063.n…… @GSC_CGC

This swarm is really quite interesting. Such swarms are common generally, though new for this location. I would tell your friend these are likely unrelated to the big one :)

Are these the 'oh good, normal release of tensions' events, or 'oh no, winding up to The Big One'? Asking for a friend... I felt the M2.1 shake at 9:34 May 7th, and reported it at earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/index-en.php

Fascinating swarm of small earthquakes north of Sooke, BC today. More than 30 events most <M1 and quite shallow. These detections were made possible by the @SchoolShake network run by @UVicSEOS, @GSC_CGC and @HakaiInstitute, using @raspishake instruments. (1/3)

@VictoriaNews this is a continuation of the shallow inland earthquakes reported yesterday. The rest of these weren't felt like the early M2 were, but likely part of the same sequence.

The largest event in the sequence was an M2.1 which occurred at 9:34 pm May 7th, and was reported as felt. The bulk of the events occurred during a 4.5 hr window between 9:30 pm May 7th and 2:00 am May 8th. (2/3)

It was a pleasure to work with the incredible Jalal Norooz Oliaee & Chase Sun from the Metrology Research Centre @NRC_CNRC. We used their in-house developed sensors to measure & map natural sources of #methane. Jalal makes final preparations before a day of surveying. @GSC_CGC.

After several years not making it up north, it is a pleasure to get back up to the Arctic again with the @GSC_CGC, especially with all this sunshine!
