The adjective aiōnios can mean “eternal,” “age-long,” or “belonging to the age to come.” That semantic range allows debate about duration. The noun kolasis means punishment or penalty; the word itself does not specify destruction.

@olusip So that verse is the prophet is applying that same idea to an entire city and its people. It's a promise to people sitting in exile, thinking "it's over for us", that it isn't over. It's a promise of comeback to a people who had every reason not to believe it.

@olusip The verse is saying that the "woman" who looks finished is going to have more children than the one who looks like she has everything. The loser will outlast the winner. That's kind of pattern in the Hebew Bible: Sarah, Rachel, Hannah all couldn't have children then suddenly did.

@RealNelsonChung @melissa53759624 @antiantimormon You've got the consensus backwards. The Satan/Lucifer synthesis comes from Christian theologians, mainly Origen and Tertullian in the 2nd-3rd centuries. It's reception history, not what Isaiah 14 or Job says in its own context.

@antiantimormon If you ask the overwhelming majority of Bible scholars, they’ll tell you that Satan and Lucifer are both called sons of God/morning stars in the Bible. Jesus is called the morning star in Rev 22:16. So we’re right about it. Own it.

I personally have no problem with an interpretative tradition that treats Jesus and Satan as both real and related, but to claim the Bible requires that interpretation is simply not accurate.

@sheymaNn24 A softer reading is that it's more like an observation about how learning works. Show up oriented toward something, absorb more of it. Show up checked out and even a good explanation slides off. But that reading makes it hard to explain the inclusion of the Isaiah material.

@sheymaNn24 For example, right after v. 12, Matthew quotes Isaiah 6, a passage where God tells Isaiah to preach in a way that hardens people rather than converts them. Most scholars take that as Matthew framing this as judgment, not just the natural result of paying attention or not.

@Estoppelenjoyer @maklelan Check a standard Hebrew lexicon entry for ger. Check one academic commentary on a key passage. See whether major reference works make the same clean distinction Gagnon does. If they don’t, then you’re looking at a contested or overstated claim.

This is a ridiculous misrepresentation. Biblical categories for foreigners were neither systematic nor consistent & no legal vetting process for some formal "citizenship" can be found. The notion ger/zar/nekar can be meaningfully mapped onto US immigration statuses is laughable.

Many Evangelicals and Catholics fall for a pro-illegal-immigration argument allegedly based on Scripture because they don't actually understand what Scripture says about the issue and allow people with little knowledge on the subject (but who pretend they are experts) to delude them. The ger or sojourner is a legal immigrant, roughly equivalent to an immigrant in the US who has been granted citizenship after going through the vetting process prescribed by US law. They are to be treated like natural-born citizens. However, there are two other Hebrew words for foreigners used in the Old Testament (zar and nekhar) that would equate with illegal immigrants in the US and they are not recipients of the same benefits and protections as the ger.
