Black Hat was kinda Defcon without the lines. Lots of us spoke at both. Fun story -- @schmoilito once spoke at Black Hat, and wasn't scheduled at Defcon because "he forgot". He also had one of my favorite bits of research. So, halfway through my DC talk I dragged him on stage.

This is probably the best take. My version -- respectfully, and from some time ago: "Black Hat may or may not still be Black Hat. But Defcon is *certainly* Defcon." I maintain Black Hat was a (very successful) ploy to get companies to pay to send you to Defcon.
