@scottgrimbleby @willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno He was on his stomach, literally being tased. Police are supposed to be disciplined so the adrenaline doesn't override their training. If they thought he had a bomb, why would they get closer and kick him in the head?

The Metropolitan Police denouncing a party leader a week before elections - over a retweet.
This is outrageous.
Forget what you think about the retweet.
If you accept this sort of police interference in our democracy, you legitimise a deeply disturbing precedent.

“Apprehending violent and dangerous criminals is a full contact and messy task which may appear shocking to observers with little experience of policing in the real world.” Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley writes to Zack Polanski.
English

@scottgrimbleby @owenjonesjourno Being purposefully dim, just as Owen is.
English

@scottgrimbleby @williams2mark @owenjonesjourno If an expert told me this wasn’t necessary I still wouldn’t believe him, partly down to the fact that I have eyes and partly because I rather enjoyed him being volleyed in the swede.
English

@BarryGlen345955 @owenjonesjourno He’s asking a question, not making a judgement?
English

@owenjonesjourno @scottgrimbleby I’d say that’s probably warranted, Owen - don’t you? Left wing policing sounds fucking horrific. Terrified of using force in case you end up in a tribunal? Have some fucking perspective you lemon.
English

@williams2mark @owenjonesjourno Again, my instinct is that I support what they did
English

@scottgrimbleby @owenjonesjourno Do you need to be an expert to sit on a jury and make your mind up when presented with evidence?
English

@willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno @scottgrimbleby Pava would be hard to deploy when he was face down. Pava had been used prior to the taser. Taser wires break.
English

@williams2mark @owenjonesjourno So you know, I instinctively support what they did. But what Owen asked was for an expert opinion, which is entirely reasonable. Are you an expert?
English

@scottgrimbleby @owenjonesjourno He was asking this question:
Why did he kick the knife wielding maniac in the head, when his colleague was struggling to keep him on the ground?
Do you honestly not know the answer ?
English

@AlwaysAgnew @willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno True. Did they know where the hand was, and did they know he didn’t have anything else?
I really do think that it’s hard for anyone to properly understand the absolute adrenaline that they would have felt in that moment, life at risk, and how that would influence their actions
English

@scottgrimbleby @willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno Why would you hit his head and not the hand holding the weapon?
English

@willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno I’m obviously not, you were just saying they had other things to use.
English

@scottgrimbleby @owenjonesjourno No. Why are you obsessed with hitting someone in the head Scott? You’ve got serious issues… also they had no idea if he’d fallen on his knife.
English

@owenjonesjourno I guess if they were armed officers, then they would have used arms to incapacitate until they were no longer a threat, so without arms should they incapacitate by any means until they are no longer a threat? Just a thought
English

@scottgrimbleby Well actually I'm trying to understand the training! I'm being genuinely open minded here.
If someone is armed with a knife which they have maimed people with, are you supposed to Taser them and then kick them repeatedly in the head
English

@willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno So if they got their baton out and hit him in the head would that be ok? Genuine question
English

@owenjonesjourno @scottgrimbleby I doubt that very much. They have other devices available- baton & pepper spray which they didn’t use - both more effective than kicking in the head continually.
English

@willireallyam1 @owenjonesjourno Have you been in that kind of situation?
English

@scottgrimbleby @owenjonesjourno I have and I wouldn’t kick someone in the head. This is a NEW thing. They never used to do this.
English

@williams2mark @owenjonesjourno Or he’s just asking a genuine question to get an answer from an expert?
English

@owenjonesjourno @scottgrimbleby I think when you look at the facts :
- He is still holding a knife
-He’s stabbed people
- He’s resisting arrest
If you don’t understand why he was being kicked in the head then you are either struggling with basic logic or purposefully acting dim: a British Tucker Carlson
English

@owenjonesjourno Exactly - it’s so hard to judge when we don’t know what they are told/trained to do in that situation. And add to that the adrenaline that they will have felt when they genuinely felt their lives were at risk. Easy for people to see it as black and white when watching it on TV
English

@RossMcCaff @owenjonesjourno Or maybe the politician shouldn’t engage to begin with?
English

Doesn't matter how wrong you think Polanski was, the Met Police Commissioner is either politically neutral or he isnt. This is a highly personal attack on a prominent politician a week before elections. Slippery slope

English

@owenjonesjourno A good, rational way of asking, instead of others who jump to conclusions.
Everyone should put themselves in the shoes of those officers first, along with the training they will have no doubt had, before making assumptions.
English

@GrahamSmyth The comments here are unbelievable. Just drawn, away, against 3rd in the league.
Yet it’s ’on Farke’ ‘points lost’, ‘weak’
Give your heads a wobble

FT Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United
A sucker punch given how long they led, but a big, big point on the road.
