@rdominguezibar Most consequential? This is like duh. Everyone keeps saying have standards. How was this piece any different? Good idea? Sure. Most consequential? Yeah no
Demis Hassabis just published the most consequential essay in AI this year. Nobel Prize winner. CEO of Google DeepMind. The person who built AlphaFold.
His estimate: AGI in a few years. His comparison: not the internet. Electricity. Fire.
The number that should stop you cold is this one. 10x the Industrial Revolution at 10x the speed. The Industrial Revolution took 100 years to reshape civilization. He is describing something an order of magnitude larger happening in a decade.
His policy proposal is the part nobody is covering:
▫️ A FINRA-style Standards Body for frontier AI
▫️ Labs submit models 30 days before release for independent testing
▫️ Benchmarks updated quarterly, built independently from labs
▫️ The body could coordinate a slowdown among all Frontier Labs if needed
That last bullet is the one. The CEO of Google DeepMind just publicly proposed a legal mechanism to pause AI development if the situation demands it.
He ended with this: "We've essentially found a way to make sand think."
Either the most important sentence written this decade or the most embarrassing. No in between.
A tourist was seriously injured after a bison tossed them about 8 feet into the air in Yellowstone National Park. The attack was captured on video by photographer Mike Macleod.
feedback is pretty simple. until they rip up the seating and restructure the Huntsman so that students are courtside behind and on side of baskets... nothing will matter. over the last 20 years all serious programs have created a "Cameron indoor" atmosphere. Michigan, UVA, Maryland and many more have moved students to the floor. Not the kinda sorta floor... actually on the floor. Even the Clippers get this with "The Wall". Atmosphere breeds home advantage and success. Success breeds donors. Not the reverse order/ Atmosphere and energy should be 100% of the mission of any renovation ...and not "really soft chairs, in-game dining and club seating". those do nothing. Get the place rocking... the rest takes care of itself.
Lionel Messi is by far the greatest player to ever play and the greatest player that could ever be. But more importantly than his otherworldly divine footballing talents is the manner in which he carries himself. He makes everyone want to emulate his humility and class. The love that people have for Messi stems from this dual combination: Divine talent coupled with indescribable humility.
Drone operator sends 2,500 drones into the air for a drone show celebrating America's 250th birthday in North Richland Hills, Texas.
"...For America 250, we celebrate in style!" said Sky Elements Drones.
Remarkable.
According estimates from industry sources the additions of @RFootball & @TerpsFootball has incrementally added between 80 and 100 million per year to the Big Ten Network by completing the i-95 corridor from New York, Philly, Baltimore, Washington,DC along with much of Northern and Central Virginia in carriage fees from cable companies for the network
@ScrollnKey@_johnleone@RSNBUtes There are still windows where things are permissible or prohibited. May-June are when official visits can happen. July-Aug is a dead period with no OVs. Visits can start up again when the season begins. Signing day is the first week of Dec.
With Darnell Jackson Jr.'s commitment to Utah, all eight official visitors from the Utes' final visit weekend are now pledged to play for @RSNBUtes and co. That is one heck of a way to close out the recruiting cycle. #GoUtes#TeamFun#CoffeeIsForClosers
@DSorensen@_johnleone@RSNBUtes Got it. So there is no (new) hard deadline or anything. Just that you have more guys taking officials in summer - and hence more potential for commitments. Technically none of the players need to commit. Just becoming more of a trend aligned with visits. Yes?
@ScrollnKey@_johnleone@RSNBUtes They don't sign until December. But the recruiting calendar changed so that players can take their official visits during the summer instead of the fall/winter. So most schools land a bulk of their class by July and play defense against flips until December.
This Utah offense this year is insane 🤯🤯

Yes, it holds up. Wyoming generated ~40.7 TWh in 2024 (EIA). Nigeria’s grid electricity production sits around 30-40 TWh annually in recent years (Ember, EIA-aligned, and Statista data), despite ~400× the population.
Nigeria faces chronic grid constraints, low capacity utilization, and widespread blackouts, so much consumption comes from private diesel generators instead. The comparison is stark but accurate for centralized generation. The rest of the thread’s facts also check out with supporting studies.
A few things I learned today:
1. Being born blind completely abolishes the risk of developing Schizophrenia.
2. If Paul Revere took his midnight ride this year, he could stop at 7 Dunkin locations.
3. Nigeria, with 240m people, generates less electricity than Wyoming, with 0.6m
4. Almost 40% of Stanford students report having a disability.
