'He is remarkably sensitive and brittle when it comes to political challenge' According to political theorist Maurice Glasman, Keir Starmer's legal academic background has left him ill-equipped to grapple with the realities of political life. @michaelgove | @madz_grant | @blue_labour

‘This is, in a nutshell, everything that is wrong with Keir Starmer’s government.’ @Benkentish can’t quite believe the timing of Rachel Reeves’ latest announcement.

@JohnRentoul The chaos that would be caused would be immense. So many times I saw whips in a flap on how to vote in a free vote on detailed amendments.

The bit I’m looking forward to most if Burnham becomes PM is sacking Jonathan Reynolds and all govt whips, abolishing the whipping system

🟠SUTTON & CHEAM: I should have included this last month: London County Court decided David Campanale suffered 5 counts of "unlawful religious discrimination" when Lib Dems deselected him as candidate & replaced him with Luke Taylor: insidecroydon.com/2026/04/30/sut…

@simonmontefiore @JohnRentoul Especially as it should be 'King in the North'. But 'frit' and 'for the birds' seem only to be heard in a political context these days.

Political language: I enjoy the fashionable new political phrases everyone in the media uses slavishly that usually contain an adequate and shorter word for the very same thing. Psycho-drama is in fact .... a drama. Mood-music just means.... the mood. Omnicrisis= a crisis. The egregious cliche 'playbook' is just a book or a programme. The tedious Talkingpoints = points. Offramp=exit. It is fun to deploy the fashionable words of the moment - but all of the above have long since been tired cliches. Perhaps we need a new set. And whatever you do, never again use the tragic: 'King of the North' or 'Love Actually'

Tech companies are finding the boundaries at the moment, hence harmless material being removed then reinstated. That's partly teething problems of implementation, partly the chilling of innovation by such government intervention. But a free-for-all won't cut it in this day & age

@TorstenBell Beating recession-hit Germany, politically gridlocked France, and notoriously unstable Italy is the flex you're going for?

In 2025 the UK was the fastest growing European G7 economy. Today the IMF forecast the same to be the case in 2026, with the UK very likely the fastest growing of the whole G7 in the first quarter of the year (Japan data out tomorrow)
IMF@IMFNews

UK growth in 2026 is revised up to 1.0%, reflecting stronger-than-expected momentum before the Middle East war. Growth is set to slow as higher energy prices, tighter financial conditions, and global uncertainty weigh on activity, underscoring need for sound macro policies. imf.org/en/news/articl…

Just before I peeled away from Whitehall to catch my train home from Waterloo, the main draw for this particular crowd took to the big screen. The rest of London was also less safe whilst 4,000 police officers allowed both groups to indulge in this. /END

I felt safe here too though. My overriding emotion at both was sadness. So much naivety. People being pushed into corners they don't really understand by populists who fully understand manipulation. The country is poorer for having both groups played like this. 6/7

The LibDems in Sutton used to have roadside skip collection back in the day when they had a claim to be seen as innovative. That was more than a quarter of a century ago. wandsworth.gov.uk/rubbish-and-re…

@maureenhamill @SandDancer9 @PolitlcsUK @thetimes There is nothing to say he needs to resign his position as Mayor but would have to if elected to Parliament. Boris didn't have to do either way as it's the fact that the Mayor of Manchester is also the Police & Crime Commissioner which excludes him. Different set up in London
