In 1992, Mark Hayes wrote SimJesse, an Mac app that cleverly stitched together audio from Jesse Jackson's 1988 Convention Speech. The app seems to be lost to time, but I was able to recreate from memory a small portion of what you'd hear.

@htmx_org I have one of the Blueberry-variant Studio Displays in my collection, and we remember the gray as being way worse than it actually was. What *is* noticeable on this monitor is the VGA fuzziness.

note also that the gray baseline allows using both dark & light for visual affordances this got nuked by the 1st gen washed out led monitors, users cranked up brightness to deal w/them then led monitors got better & now we have the disaster of "supporting" light & dark mode

every button is obvious the inset text box invites clicking & makes obvious that it accepts text clear menus provide a visual affordance for alt-key accelerators not apparent: there is a clear request indicator (the netscape logo animates) when a request is in flight

I've collected many great programming books over the years. This one wins for best cover of all time from my collection, even though the book itself isn't very good. Do you have a competitor for the best programming book cover?

@spirodonfl A text-driven internet would be demonstrably better, but the real magic is in the community drawn to it.

hot take: if the internet was exclusively text driven (perhaps with some styling / formatting) and had no capacity for images or videos, it would be demonstrably better proof: look around you (digitally)
