They call sandhill cranes “ribeye of the sky” because their breast meat is famously beef-like, but in FL, intentionally killing a sandhill is a 3rd degree felony with a fine up to 5k. You can feel their presence when they’re lurking nearby, much like you can with peacocks (and how you might imagine a raptor), and they let out this ancient call. We have so many deeply ensouled, edible creatures here. Beyond the law, one should exercise caution with how they treat them lest they be forever cursed by spirits of swamp and scrub.

A Sandhill Crane couple guides their colts over the metal bridge. This is the same couple that raised a Canada Goose several years ago. I can tell as the male Sandhill Crane is missing part of a toe on his left foot.
