This happened Monday in Bridgeport, Illinois. Hundreds of bicyclists showed up for a Memorial ride and “die-in” in honor of Chicago bike safety advocate Riley O’Neil.
O’Neil, 35, was riding his bike Friday afternoon when he was struck when a car door suddenly opened and pushed him into traffic where an oncoming 18 wheeler hit him.
O’Neil worked for the Chicago Department of Transportation for two years and was the planner of a program dedicated to preventing collisions on Chicago streets. 😳
O’Neil was riding south along the painted bike lane on South Halsted Street before 5 p.m. when a man getting out of a white BMW hit him with his door, thrusting O’Neil into traffic. O’Neil fell under the back wheels of an 18-wheeler semitruck going in the same direction.
Dr. Travis Curtis, a Bridgeport resident, was on the opposite side of the street when he saw the truck run over O’Neil. He ran over and immediately provided first aid to O’Neil.
Curtis, a doctor who worked as a paramedic before med school performed CPR on O’Neill until paramedics arrived.
He said other people at the scene saw the driver of the white BMW try to leave. Chicago PD issued the driver, who has not been publicly identified, four citations: parking illegally, for unsafely opening the door, driving on a suspended license and driving with no insurance.
“I shouted, ‘Don’t leave, don’t let them leave,’ and a woman got in front of the car I think to make sure they didn’t go anywhere,” Curtis said.
Paramedics rushed O’Neil to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Such a tragedy. Traffic is so heavy on city streets sometimes and people don’t see bicyclists and aren’t looking for them.
Many said they thought more should have happened to the driver besides a few citations since he was driving on a suspended license and driving with no insurance.
I think we need tougher laws on people who aren’t supposed to be driving. Some tickets for causing the death of a man is not enough in my opinion.
Have you ever ridden your bike in a bicycle lane during busy traffic? Did you feel safe? Should more be done to protect bicyclists on the streets? What could prevent freak accidents like this?
