There are fundamental asymmetries between doers and critics. It’s easy to criticize but very hard to actually accomplish something. Worst of all, no one criticizes the critics. If the doer pushes back or defends their work, they risk being seen as thin-skinned, defensive, or as someone who’s “ignoring” the criticism. Journalists rarely do it either. They often have a symbiotic relationship with critics: critics provide controversy, which makes for a good story. The alternative risks being dismissed as a “fluff piece.” That’s why it’s always refreshing to see the rare journalist who turns a critical eye on the critics themselves.
